Getting back into the swing of things...

I hope each of your families had a wonderful break and holidays! We are so glad to be back with our students! Please remember that the school day begins at 7:45 a.m. It is important that students are here in their classrooms at that time so that we may begin our day. Also, it is important to remember that PreK and Kindergarten release at 3:10, while 1st -5th grades are still having class until 3:20. Students need to be in class until the end of their instructional day. If they are picked up early, they are missing instruction.

During the Spring semester, our focus is on learning and relearning as much as we can every day. Students have matured and understand the rules and routines at their grade level. During the next few months, we will be pushing them to meet short and long term goals. We will utilize every teachable moment of our days. Our goal is to increase individual student performance across the district on STAAR assessments by 10%.

Spring tutorials began on Monday after school from 3:30-4:30 through the ACE program for 4th and 5th grade. Reading tutorials are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Math tutorials are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students who need to participate received a letter on Monday.

We have a new superintendent! Mr. Jason Adams comes to us from Huntington ISD where he has been high school principal. The staff is very excited about the possibilities ahead for the district. We want to also welcome Ms. Lauren Layfield to 2nd grade as long term substitute. She is taking the place of Mrs. Bain who chose to retire in December. Ms. Layfield is a Kerens alumi and recent graduate of Sam Houston State University with a degree in mass communications. She is currently enrolled in an approved alternative teaching program and will soon be eligible for hire as a teacher. Welcome Ms. Layfield!

Report cards went home on 1/13/2016. I encourage you to stay in contact with your child's teacher if you have concerns or questions. As always, if I can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great month!
