Midway Mustang Memo
January 2023
Dear Midway Families,
We hope all our Mustang families had a lovely, safe, and restful Winter Break spending quality time together and enjoyed ringing in the new year! We were so excited to welcome our students back to school this week. We saw lots of smiles. Students have spent these first few days reviewing Midway's routines, procedures, and TROT expectations. In addition, the students and their teachers have discussed one word they will focus on and/or goals they will work toward during 2023. The hallways are lined with their creative displays of the resolutions we are committing to grow in. We will support each other along the way.
A common question we often hear from parents is "How may I help my student thrive?". The school-home partnership is critical to supporting the growth and development of our students. We are so excited to invite our parents to attend a very special Coffee with Counselor session Thursday, January 12th 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Midway Cafe'. We have a very special guest speaker that will be sharing information based on Kathleen Edelman's book A Grown-up's Guide to Kids' Wiring. See more information below and on the flyer that was sent home in your child's folder. It will be an hour well worth your time and you will walk away with tools you can apply to the interactions you have with your children (and others) right away. We hope to see you there!
We need some help from parents with students bringing their lunch from home. Please make sure your student brings their lunch in easy-to-open containers and refrain from sending in glass containers. This will help us ensure all Mustangs can easily access their lunch and stay safe. Lunches from home should be sent in with students each morning. Days get super busy and we don't want a child to worry about what, where, or when their lunch from home will arrive to school. Sometimes, we enjoy a treat from a local restaurant such as Subway or Chick-fil-A. We ask that those treats only be brought in when a parent/grandparent will be joining a student for lunch based on the appropriate assigned grade-level lunch visitor week. Thank you so much for your help.
Forsyth County Schools will be adopting a new math resource for next school year. There will be a community review period from January 9th-30th. We have a sample of each of the four products available in the Media Center. For further questions, please email Mary Catherine Adam, Math Instructional Coach, at Madam@forsyth.k12.ga.us .
As always, thank you for sharing your precious children with us. Please let us know if you need anything at all.
Kind regards,
Daphne Rogers, Principal
Jennifer Brown, Assistant Principal
Davis Barlow, Admin Assistant

Greetings, Parents!
It's hard to believe that the first half of the year is drawing to a close! We have been busy developing your child's love and passion for reading by helping them with their power goals. Your child is engaged in reading both books of choice, and books on their level, for 30 minutes of their school day. Those 30 minutes are recorded as 2 Steps in their reading log to capture the volume of reading they are doing. Your child also has power goal conferences with their teacher in either a 1:1 or small group setting to practice the next step they need to take their reading to the next level.
You and your partnership play a vital role in helping your child maintain their love and passion for reading! Thank you for partnering with your child to ensure they are reading for and practicing their power goal at home daily for 30 minutes (2 Steps) , and for 15 minutes ( 1 Step) each day on the weekend. They should be recording their Steps in their reading log. Your child may read any book of choice, including books from MyOn or Epic. Your child should have power words, and/or a Skills Card that will let you know exactly what they need to practice.
Thank you for working with your child to help them flourish, and please let me know if you need anything additional!

Winter News from the Nurse
Holiday Season is upon us! and we know how fast the next few weeks will fly by. Remember to keep up with your healthy habits by making good food choices, washing your hands, blowing your nose properly and getting a good night's sleep.
Student with a fever greater than 100.5 need to stay home until they are fever free for 24hrs without medications (Ibuprofen or acetaminophen) . As much as your child may want to go to school and may feel better, please do not give them a dose of fever reducing medication and send them to school. With the Flu season, Covid 19 and lots of stomach bugs in full swing, it is more important than ever to keep your child at home if they are feeling ill. This link to CHOA is my child to sick for school is full of useful information.
https://www.choa.org/parent-resources/everyday-illnesses/too-sick-for-school
“A sore throat is a common symptom of many different types of illness and can be contagious if it is due to strep throat or a virus. Your child should rest at home if persistent sore throat and see a pediatrician to determine if they need treatment with antibiotics for strep throat or recover from the virus with time and rest," warned Dr. Stewart.
PLEASE do not send your child to school with any types of medications in their lunch box or backpack. Anything they may need to keep them comfortable during the school day needs to be checked into the clinic, even cough drops or nasal saline. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the clinic.
If your child suffers from asthma or food allergies, please have your pediatrician complete the appropriate action plan and bring any rescue medication to the school clinic. The action plan paperwork can be found on the school nurse page on the school website. If you are not sure if your child needs to have an action plan or any questions, please contact me.
We have very limited extra pants/shirts in the clinic. If your student may need a change of clothing at school, please send extra clothing in their backpack.
