Coker Mission--Every Child, Every Day
We support and foster a positive community of successful, life-long learners and leaders by meeting the needs of every individual while challenging each one to reach full potential.
Supervision at Arrival & Dismissal
Although the first week of learning new arrival and dismissal procedures have been challenging, the Coker staff synergized together to insure a smoother and safer system each day. Please take time to look at the updated workbook pages to verify your current assignments. Those staff members who serve as a supervisor for arrival must report on time at 7:00am. All staff members are assigned an afternoon supervisor role and should report no later than 2:40pm. Please ask parents to wait until after your duty to meet.
Leadership Quote--August
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams
Caught Being a Leader
Dr. Karen Martinez, Mary Lou Roemer and Emily Niles did a fabulous job organizing our first Leadership Pep Rally. They enthusiastically agreed to take on the leadership role in spearheading this wonderful event. Thank you ladies for your dedication and hard work!!!!
Leader in Me Implementation
During the second week, continue to use leadership language to establish routines and systems. The importance of modeling leadership for your students cannot be overestimated. Provide daily opportunities for them to learn by listening and watching your interactions with students, parents, support staff and colleagues. Be sure to provide concrete examples and connect leadership language to actions.
Provide an overview of the 7 Habits. Guide students through the Habit 1 section of the Leader in Me Activity Guide. Read the Habit 1 story from the 7 Habits of Happy Kids book. Explain that all students will hold a classroom leadership role. Use leadership language in content area lessons. Begin a 7 Habits leadership themed bulletin board.

Five Keys to Motivating Struggling Learners
Part of building a relationship is getting to know your students. Praise can be a two-edged sword. It has benefits, such as building confidence and encouraging students, but there are also disadvantages. We find that effective praise makes a difference with struggling students. With struggling students, oftentimes they need praise to help them get started, especially because they have never felt success in an academic setting.

Coker Handbook Tidbits-Recess
Students must be supervised at all times when classes are at recess. Please be vigilant and aware of where students are when they are at play. To insure proper and safe supervision teachers must be on duty to monitor students. The teachers on recess duty should coordinate in such a way that all play areas are constantly under a watchful eye. This will require you to be active; that is, “walking around”, during recess.
NEISD prohibits recess to be taken away from a student as a consequence. It is important to review, model, and practice your grade level recess rules, expectations, and procedures with your students. Click here to access the Handbook for detailed information.
