What's going on at OJN?

Welcome back! What an #awesome first month of school we had with all of our Jr. Apaches! The students have been busy learning procedures and expectations along with building relationships with our new students and teachers! For the 2018-2019 school year, we are focusing on the theme of student leadership. Ask your child about the leadership opportunities they are exploring within their classrooms and the school! A few to highlight are the morning video announcements, junior librarians, leaders of the week and so much more! The students are learning all about the 7 Habits of Healthy, Happy Kids.

If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas please contact me in the front office!

---- Mrs. Emily Tracy

Arrival Reminders

Parent Reminder:

Student Drop-off/Pick-up

If you are dropping your student off in front of the school in the morning, please use the south entrance to the school. After dropping off, proceed to the loop and exit out the same south entrance/exit you entered. This will ensure less confusion when the buses enter. If you are walking your student to the front of the school, please use the north entrance to park. If your student eats breakfast, please use the north entrance and please park to drop your student off. We need to keep the bus lane on the north side of the building clear of traffic. Thank you.

Apache Way Student of the Month!

We select an Apache Way Healthy Habit for each month. During the month, teachers discuss the habit and look for students displaying the life skill during the school day. September’s habit is Be Proactive. Students were challenged to look at what needs done, chose to be proactive and took the initiative to do it. At OJN we talk about the “Apache Way: The Right Way Every Day.” To recognize our outstanding Apaches the staff selects one student from each classroom as the Apaches of the Month. These students will get to participate in a celebration at the end of each month with Mrs. Cordes. The first Apache of the Month celebration will be on Friday, September 28.

OJN Student Fundraiser -- Deb's Handmade Soaps, Lotions and Bath Bombs

Our students are selling Deb's handmade bath products this year for their fundraiser. There are a variety of soaps, lotions and bath bombs. If your child sells just 10 items, they will earn a trip to take a private tour of Lucas Oil Stadium! Sell 20 items -- they may bring a chaperone! And sell 30 items -- they get to ride to Indy in a limousine! Pretty exciting for these kiddos and it goes to our awesome OJN PTO! Orders are due Friday, September 7! If you have any questions, please reach out to our office! (260) 563-2345 or by email: tracye@apaches.k12.in.us

From the Nurse:

Cold and flu season is fast approaching. We are already seeing a lot of coughs and colds. Please remember to bring in medication such as cough medicine or cough drops as the school does not provide stock medication to give out. Also, if your child is prone to headaches or stomach issues, please provide pain meds like Tylenol, ibuprofen, and/or Tums for upset stomach or acid reflux.

***Any and All medication must be brought in and transported to or from school by the parents. Students are not allowed to bring medication themselves.

Remember also our policy about illness and being in school. Please keep your child at home for any vomiting, fever over 100.0, suspicious/contagious rash, red/irritated/itchy eyes(pink eye). We request they be fever-free, without medication, and have no vomiting episodes for 24-hours prior to returning to school.

Another reminder for students: Carry extra clothes in the student's backpacks in case of any spillage or accidents.

Please contact Mr. John Davis or Mrs. Peggy Ballschmidt, Nurse at OJN or (260) 563-2345 for more information.

Artsonia is an online art gallery where students can upload their art and keep it in a portfolio that is available for their friends and family to view. The beauty of Artsonia is that once the student’s artwork has been uploaded to their online gallery, friends and family can order gifts that features the artwork on it, such as mugs, trivets, cards and much more! When items are ordered, 20% of the purchase is donated to the school. A permission slip has been sent home explaining Artsonia in more detail. To sign your student up, you must return the permission slip. The school will submit the email you provide, and Artsonia will send you information concerning how to access your student’s digital art portfolio. Each year the student will be able to upload more art and will build a multi-year portfolio. A huge thank you to Mrs. Gullotti, our art teacher, for providing this to our families! She will need help uploading images, so if you are free and would like to scan and upload images for her, please contact her at the school or email her at gullottia@apaches.k12.in.us.
