james
Gang Member at Age 9 In the beginning, it wasn’t so bad,” says James, a 19-year-old survivor, describing the childhood he never had. “All the other kids in the gang protected me, treated me like their baby brother. I guess that was because I was only nine.” Under better circumstances, James would have been doing other things at nine years of age. Like sitting in a 3rd grade classroom, playing soccer with his friends, or eating dinner around a dinner table filled with conversation and laughter and people who loved him. Instead he was dodging bullets. “I remember there was a dispute and four bullets flew right over my head. Man, that was a sound I’ll never, ever forget. I was real nervous going to school that day, because I was sure someone was after me.”
