November is Native American Heritage Month!

Every year on November 1, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the remarkable Native Americans who have contributed a lot to improve the character of the nation. This month is also referred to as the American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. November is the time to rejoice in diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions and to appreciate the great contributions of the Native Americans. This month allows us to spread awareness about tribes or to educate people about the various challenges faced by the Native Americans in the past and today. Throughout this month, we commit to keep on supporting the remaining Native American tribes and letting the world know about their sacrifices.

American Education Week Is Here!

Tomorrow is the beginning of American Education Week! Every year, schools across our country celebrate public education and honor the individuals working to ensure that every student receives a quality education. Each day of the week has its own theme, during which we celebrate our public school community. Festivities honor the team of people who work in our nation’s public schools, everyone from the classroom teacher to the cafeteria worker and administrative staff, plus countless others.

Here at EXCEL we will be celebrating with the following days:

  • Monday: “Memory Lane Monday” - We were students once too! Scholars will guess the names from a collage of staff members' pictures when they were in school.

  • Tuesday: “Talk About It Tuesday” - Students respond to writing prompts about their educational experience or their thoughts about the purpose of public education.

  • Wednesday: Parent Read-In: WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS! Please email Ms. Sothern ASAP if you're interested in a virtual visit/read-in.

  • Thursday: First Quarter EXCEL Family COVID-19 Community Meeting (5:30 p.m.) and November SEED/EXCEL Board Meeting (6:30 p.m.)

  • Friday: Principal For a Day! Students are invited to submit their names for election to be Principal for a day! Please use this link to submit names. the winner will be announced on Wednesday:

We also encourage families to write a note of gratitude to your children's teachers, our support staff, cafeteria workers - anyone you believe has made a positive impact on your scholar this year. I am sure your words will be greatly appreciated!

Join us on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. just before the SEED/EXCEL Board meeting for a town hall to discuss COVID-19, vaccines, the end of virtual instruction in January, and what things could look like in the coming months.

Then, hang out with us for the SEED/EXCEL Board meeting to get more information about student performance, facility updates, and more! The link for the COVID 19 Town Hall is See you there!
Random pool testing has begun at EXCEL Academy for students whose parents have given consent. Random pool testing is another tool we use to ensure the safety of all our students, especially during this time. Your child's participation increases our chances of keeping our community even safer. If you would like for your child to be monitored for a possible asymptomatic COVID-19 case, you should complete the following online forms and send them to the front office.

Thank you in advance for your support.

PGCPS is offering COVID-19 vaccinations to ALL students ages 5-11 who are now eligible for the vaccine in various locations. Through a partnership with the Prince George's Department of Health, our school has been selected as a location for vaccines for our scholars! EXCEL students, as well as students at another charter school, have been prioritized and will be offered appointments for dose one on December 22nd, and dose two on January 22nd at 4:00 p.m.; after dismissal has been completed. These appointments are also available for our middle school scholars.

Individuals younger than 18 receiving vaccinations must have a parent or legal guardian complete the appropriate consent form and bring it to the clinic:

You can begin to sign up using the link below (the slots that start at 3 pm will be rescheduled since we are starting at 4 pm, so please don't select those.)

Awards Program Update

We are very excited to be able to hold our awards program in person for our scholars for the first time in over a year! We look forward to celebrating them next month on December 9, 2021. At this time, we are planning for a CLOSED ceremony for EXCEL students and staff as we did not receive enough publicity forms from impacted grades for us to be able to have a Zoom event (53% for students grades 2 - 8.) We are, however, looking at other formats to be able to publicly celebrate those scholars whose forms we did receive.

We will keep you posted.
