The Definition
The definition of wetland is: A land that consist of mainly water.
The Four Types of Wetlands.
There are four different types of wetlands, and those are, Swamps, Fens, Marshes and Bogs. A swamp is the only one out of all wetlands that has trees in it. Its also often found near rivers. A swamp is created when and river overflows. Fens are a type of wetland that has water under the soil. Marshes, this is a type of wetland that can be identified by the soil that is covered by shallow water all year long. Finally last but not least, Bogs. Bogs is where peat is formed. Peat is created when organic matter such as plant decay. The decay is very slow because it is so wet.
Plants & Animals in Each Wetland.
There are different plants and animals in each wetland. Marshes creates a dense reed bed where many fish and amphibians thrive. These areas are also home to birds such as herons which eat these animals, Fens, plants grow here such as sedeges, are generally more diverse and short than in a wetland, There are less birds here because, they have less vegetation to shelter in. The damp conditions still create a habitat in which amphibians thrive. Swamps are home to many plants and animals, and in tropical climates can have predatory animals such as alligators. Last but not least bogs. Plants that grow in bogs have to be able to survive in a waterlogged environment with few nutrients. A variety of animals such as moose, beavers, and a variety of nesting birds are known to live in bog areas.
Destruction in Wetlands & How we can prevent it.
People are filling in wetlands with dirt and sand.. Which they shouldn't because its harming the plants and animals that live there.. We can prevent dirt and sand being put in there by, stopping the people who are doing it. Or we could build a little group type thing and save them, maybe by putting fences around the wetlands, or something like that. (:
