Parkway Elementary January Newsletter
A Message From Ms. Lewis...
As we head into this new year, we also head into a new semester here at Parkway. This will be a busy time of year for us as we work hard to help your child achieve proficiency in the grade level standards. You can help us with this task by making sure your kiddo is at school each day, on time, and ready to give us their best. We will use data collected from screenings and classroom assessments prior to the holiday to move forward and tackle our students' individual needs. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher for more information.
I am excited to be back and heading into this new semester with you all. Please contact me anytime with questions, concerns, or suggestions. And, as always, thank you for trusting me and my staff with your precious kiddos!
Have a wonderful New Year!
Michele

PES Receives Game and Fish Grant
According to Tamika Freeman, PES Coach, archery is a great way to sharpen skills, build self-esteem and create a stronger atmosphere for success in the classroom.
The Arkansas National Archery in the Schools Program – part of the National Archery in the Schools Program – targets students as young as fourth grade and as old as high school seniors. They learn archery skills, as well as an outdoor hobby they may enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Implementing the program will take time, but we are on our way!!
Parkway Gets Book Vending Machine!
It’s a new type of vending machine, one that isn’t dispensing candy, chips, or sodas. It’s dropping books.
Wrapped as a giant Christmas present, Parkway Elementary unveiled the machine to students and staff during the monthly Lion Pride Assembly. The machine holds 140 books, ranging from picture to chapter books. It’s only the second one in Arkansas and one of 88 in total.
The machine takes gold coins, which are earned by students as incentives for completing academic goals in the classroom. Coins are dropped in the machine to select their book of choice.
“We are so excited about our machine. We wanted to make sure we were getting books in our students hands, and building their love for reading," Lewis said. "We want the kids to take them (the books) home, read them with friends, share them with family. It’s a free book for them to keep and enjoy,” said Ms. Lewis. The vending machine is currently filled with books purchased by the school’s PTO.
Amie Horn, Learning Specialist, led the campaign to bring the book vending machine to the school. Thanks to the generous donation of a local business owner, the school now has a new way to build excitement around reading and collecting books.
"The students are so excited. I love that they are so pumped up about books. Makes my heart happy," Lewis said.
Mrs. Horn and Ms. Lewis will be working to find sponsors to help supply books, or funds, to help with the cost of filling the machine each month.
