Message from the Principal...
Parents,
As we March into the last few months of the year, I want to thank Rice parents for getting involved in their child’s/children’s education this year. We have had lots of support at our Writing Celebrations, Academic Nights, and PTO events.
I also want to encourage Rice parents to start attending the PTO meetings that are held each month. This organization helps with goals and priorities for the School Improvement Plan, as well as, give ideas for upcoming parent/community nights and activities. Our next meeting is March 7th at 11:00 a.m. in the Library and I encourage all who can to attend.
Parents, my goal is that you feel welcome at Rice Elementary. We all look forward to hosting you in the spring!
Happy Spring!
Malinda Stewart

Message from the Assistant Principal...
It’s already that time of year again, our students are buckling down in preparation for our state assessments. The STAAR tests will be here soon. This is a time for our students to “show what they know” and display their learning achievements! Please take a look at our campus parent calendar for important state and local testing dates.
As we continue through the next few weeks, please remember…
· Attendance is very important...this includes tardies and early checkout!
· Encourage students to work to their full potential...give 100% all the time...try your best even when it gets tough!
· Communicate with your child's teacher regarding their progress and any questions that come up along the way.
Thanks for being your child's biggest cheerleader!
Message From School Counselor...
Parents,
As we begin gearing up for the testing season, many students experience a difficult time adjusting to the amount of stress they are faced with due to tremendous pressures experienced in everyday life. My guidance lessons this month will continue to focus on The Rice Way, but also to stress specifically. Students and I will identify the meaning of stress, things that cause us stress, how it affects us emotionally and physically, and what we can do to help decrease it, both at school and home.
Studies say that parents can be key in helping them in times of stress. In a survey taken from KidsHealth, in students aged 9-13 only about 1 in 5 kids said they talk to a parent when they're upset, but a whopping 75% of kids said they'd like their parents to help them in times of stress.
Here's how kids said parents could help:
Talk together.
Help them feel better, like with a hug.
Give them attention; do something together.
Help them solve the problem.
Stop yelling.
Don't make them feel worse.
Help get their minds off the problem.
Pray with them.
Sometimes parents might feel like kids don't want them to get involved. That's why it’s important to provide that opportunity for communication with your child, even if all they want to say is that this problem is going on and that they’d like to try to solve it on their own. More often, they will want mom or dad to offer ideas or at least a little encouragement. Let them know that stress is normal, and not all stress is bad. By helping guide them in effective measures of dealing with stress, we can provide opportunities for growth

Third grade writers will be composing literary essays and will also be writing essays about reading.
In math, this month we will be discussing measurement. This includes area, perimeter, liquid volume, weight, time and money. We will be working on reviewing all of our multiplication math facts (0-10).
In Science, we will start talking about food chains and how they affect the ecosystem. In Social Studies, we will discuss how cultures help us to create our own identities.
Fourth Grade
Happy Spring! Some important dates upcoming for 4th Grade. Our Math and Science Night, also known as STEM night, is coming up on March 19th. There will be lots of fun activities like making slime, learning new ways to use different technology and much more! Spring Break is the week of March 11th through March 15th.
*Many thanks to all of our wonderful parents for the Valentine goodies and making our Ice Cream Sundaes a HUGE success!!
*We will be having a 4th Grade Author’s Celebration. Watch for more information in your child's Tuesday Folder. Our students have been working so diligently on their expository compositions in preparation for the Writing STAAR test. What great writers we have here at B.B. Rice!
*Coming Up:
Language Arts- Students started Historical Fiction Book Clubs this month! They are collaborating in groups and holding discussions about their book. Through this, students are gaining independence while leading their discussions and taking ownership in their reader's response. We will also be diving into our genre of Writing Test Prep. We will focus on test taking strategies and boost confidence within their writing composition pieces. All of their hard work is really showing!
Math-We are working on fractions and decimals and will begin measurement soon. Some ideas to help your children at home with this unit is to have them help you cook using the measuring tools (1/2, 3/5, ¾) or have them count money at home or the grocery store! We are solving multiple step word problems, which involve rereading the problem several times, as well as using many different ways to get the answers. All their thinking must be shown on the papers to help us understand their process!
Science-It will be exciting to learn about weathering and nature. Science DCC will be March 7th.
Social Studies-Texas independence and statehood are the focus at this time of year.
From The Library...Ms. Parks
Ask your child to tell you about a book he or she has read lately. Spring Break is a great time to read with your child or have your child read to you. Modeling reading with expression and encouraging your child to read with expression will increase reading success.
I hope you enjoy your Spring Break and thank you for your continued support of the Rice Library.0
Nurse
Spring is here. The weather is warming up, and the children will be playing outside in the sunshine. The regular use of sunscreen in children can lower the risk of skin cancer by almost 78%! That are many different types available, pick one with SPF of 15 or higher. Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
Here are some other weather tips:
Wear protective clothing, including a hat
Limit exposure when the sun is the strongest (10 am- 4 pm)
Protect your child’s eyes with sunglasses
Have a happy and healthy Spring Break!
