Additional Role for Principal and Adding of Assistant Principal

Next year, Mrs. Moran will be taking on a few new, additional responsibilities, supporting the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Mrs. Melissa Murphy, at the District Office, in addition to continuing serving as the principal of Hawthorne. This role will be shared with Mr. Sean Walsh, Longfellow principal. To ensure Hawthorne is supported, and the needs of students, parents, and staff are met, we are hiring an assistant principal who will support both Hawthorne and Longfellow schools. More information is attached in a letter, in Mrs. Moran's weekly email to parents.

Congratulations Team White!

The third graders took the first place title of the Intramural Battle of the Books Champions for the 2019 Season! Congrats to Team White, and to all the students who competed in Battle of the Books this season. A huge thank you goes to our PTA volunteers, Mrs. Lange and Mrs. Troupos, and Ms. Young our LLC director, for sharing their time and talents with our students. Thank you to all the parents who also coordinated their time and efforts in helping their children learn the details of the Battle books, and providing the opportunity to practice with them, and get them ready for their meets.

Summer Reading Book Club

Who's ready for summer?!?! Summer is a time to relax, have fun, and rejuvenate, and it's also a great time to enjoy a good book! Which is why this year, we are approaching summer reading in a new way!

Hawthorne students entering grades 1-5 will receive a book to read this summer, and have the opportunity to participate in a virtual summer book club. Students have each chosen a book, and our school will provide a copy of the book for each student to read over the summer, as well as fun and interactive things to do and think about related to the book. (Our students entering Kindergarten have already received a new book, called The Night Before Kindergarten.)

When students return in August, we will have book club celebrations planned based on the book each student read this summer! We hope this will encourage ALL of our students to read this summer, have fun, and interact with books and our staff through reading. More details to come soon on the reading activities we have planned!

Author Visit on June 3

UPDATE: Debbie Ohi has suffered a foot injury and is not able to travel to our school....therefore we will be conducting a video conference with her instead! Hawthorne is excited to welcome author and illustrator Debbie Ohi on June 3. Ms. Ohi will be speaking to K-2 students about her career that morning and talking about her new book, I’m Worried. Students have an opportunity to purchase an autographed copy of this book. The order form will be coming home soon, but if you just can’t wait, click here. Personalized orders are due by 6/3 and autographed copies will be available until 6/5. A special thank you to the PTA for this event! We are able to welcome authors throughout the year because the PTA worked with Anderson’s Book Store on the book fair last fall!

Big Rig Book Visit on June 5

The Big Rig is coming to Hawthorne on June 5! Each student will get to hop on the Big Rig truck and pick out one book for free! Students are welcome to bring $1-$2 dollars if they would like to purchase an additional book. The Big Rig is a non-profit organization that visits schools and brings gently used, donated books for children to select for summer reading. Field Day is June 7

The best day of the year is just around the corner...FIELD DAY!!! This day cannot happen without you, you, you, you too, and about 40 more of you. If you can volunteer your time between 12:45pm and 3:00pm on Friday, June 7, then please sign up for some fun in one of the 11 activities. If you can't be there to help with the fun, you can still provide some fun by signing up to bring some water balloons and/or popsicles. Thank you in advance for your consideration and hope to see you there!!!

School Supply Update

Thank you to everyone who ordered School Supply Kits! Over $450 was raised for the PTA, which will go towards student activities, field trips and special programs. And thanks to your generous donations, we were also able to purchase 8 additional kits for Mrs. Talbot to distribute to families in need! If you ordered a kit, it will be ready at your child's classroom this Fall when school starts. If you are purchasing school supplies on your own, please have your child bring them on the first day of classes in the Fall. The list will be posted on the PTA Facebook page. PTA Receipts Needed

PTA committee chairs and anyone else who has paid out of pocket for PTA events, please turn in your receipts as soon as possible. A pdf of the receipt can be emailed to Christy Whittington with a note about what the funds were used for at christywhittington01@gmail.com. We need to wrap up all expenses for this year before the end of June. Thank you!

Updates from the Health Office

Purging Student Files

Portions of the temporary health records for students moving on to middle school will be updated and/or deleted prior to the end of the school year. If you would like to come in to inspect or copy any records, please call the school health office. All immunization records, accident reports, and records of release of information contained in the permanent record will be kept as part of the permanent school records.

Medication Pick-up

Any student with medication kept at school must be picked up by you or a designated adult by June 11, 2019. After this date and time all remaining medications will be discarded.

Each school year we must have a new doctor’s order to continue giving your child medication in school. All medical forms are available on-line at www.cusd200.org/healthservices

Health Requirements for School Attendance

This is a reminder to 5th grade parents about their child’s health requirements for the next school year. If your child has had a physical or dental exam for the

next school year, please turn it into the receiving school. If they have not had a physical or dental exam, please make your appointment now. These health requirements are due before the start of the next school year. If you have any questions, please contact the health office.

Below is a list of school health requirements for kindergarten, second, sixth and ninth grade students for the upcoming school year. The required forms can be found on the district or school website under Health Services.

Physical Examination Requirements

The Illinois school code requires that students entering school for the first time (early childhood, kindergarten, or first grades), students entering kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades, and transfer students must submit evidence of a physical examination and a complete record of immunizations.

  • The completed physical examination and record of immunization form is expected at the school health office upon enrollment/ registration and required by the first day of student attendance.

  • Appointment dates for obtaining a physical exam do not meet the school requirement.

Immunization Requirements

Immunization records must show proof of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, polio and chicken pox.

  • Early childhood and sixth grade through high school students are also required to have the hepatitis B vaccine..

  • Sixth grade thru twelfth grade are required to have the Tdap vaccine.

  • Sixth grade and twelfth grade are required to have the meningococcal vaccine.

Dental Examination Requirements

Students in kindergarten, second, sixth and ninth grades must submit evidence of a dental examination by May 15th of that school year. Dental exams must be completed within 18 months prior to May 15th.

Vision Examination Requirements

Students entering Illinois schools for the 1st time (kindergarten or transfer) must submit evidence of a vision exam.

**All required health forms are available at the school office or www.cusd200.org. The school nurse may be able to provide resources for obtaining health requirements.

Celebrate your child’s birthday in a big way! Wish him/her a Happy Birthday on the Hawthorne School sign. Rent it for their big day and let them see their name in big letters and lights! August 1: Walk In Registration for NEW STUDENTS at 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 2:00-6:00 p.m. Our Hawthorne Office will open for any new students and their families who need to register and bring in paperwork on this date. Registration information can be found here.
