William Shapespeare's Famous Quote
"Get thee to a nunnery."
William Shakespeare's Famous Quote
In William Shakespear's Hamlet, Ophelia and Hamlet are bickering about women's lust in a hallway in the castle while Polonius and Claudius eavesdrop behind a tapestery. Hamlet takes back his love after Ophelia refuses his affection. Ophelia, in an effort to harm Hamlet's dignity, proclaims " I was the more deceived."(Act 3, Scene 1, Line 120). In counter Hamlet replies with malice in his voice, "Get thee to a nunn'ry."(Act 3, Scene 1, Line 121). In the time period this would roughly translate as 'Whore, get your whorey-ass to the whorehouse!' This quote captures the resentment that Hamlet now feels toward Ophelia. Sometimes people say things in the heat of the moment without thought and later regret it.
