Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
February 8, 2019
A Short Week...
I feel like we had a lot of MAKING UP to do this week - and we SURE DID! The weather last week really put us behind, but I think we gained some territory this week and are back on track!
We started our CLASSROOM JOB this week. The students that completed an application were selected for one of five jobs. Here are the jobs and the students that will fill the roles:
- Cubby Crew: Parth and Cam
- Desk Crew: Torrey
- Greeters: Jayden, Cort
- Librarian: Lily, Haley, Maddy
- Artists: Taylor, Leah, Smriti
They are really taking their jobs seriously and it is making Room 9 an even more special place to be!
Over the next five weeks, Mrs. Satkoski will teach a lesson about the brain once a week. It will help the students understand how their brain works and ways to use and understand our brain to benefit us at school and in social situations.
The Science Fair is scheduled for February 28. A few parent volunteers came during lunch today to talk to the students about it today. At the bottom of this newsletter I've included the file to access the Science Fair Packet. Thank you to Mrs. Gina Frey for helping our Rockets become future scientists!
Also attached at the bottom of this newsletter is a class list for Valetine's Day. Remember, no food is allowed to be sent with student valentines.
That's all I have for now...
Stay warm and safe this weekend!

Community Circle
We are working on learning about FOCUS/ATTENTION/LISTENING in Community Circle. We have practiced this skill in many ways. See below for the week's highlights:
- Memory Food - Listening/Memory Practice: The first student says their name and their favorite food. The next student repeats first student's name and their favorite food, then adds their name and favorite food, etc...
- Around the Circle - Listening/Attention Practice: First student says a word, next student adds a word, etc... The goal is that by the time we finish the circle, we have made a complete sentence.
- Build Each Other Up - Each student taped a heart to their back. Each student wrote a positive comment about a classmate on the heart. It was fun to watch the students read the comments for their friends.

Reading: Character Studies
We are almost finished with Because of Winn Dixie. Thank you for all the work you are doing at home to support your child while reading this book. I think everyone is growing their reading skills as we deepen our understanding of complex characters.
- Characters and the problems they encounter
- Secondary characters - how do they support the main character?
- Story Mountain
Word Study:
Writing: Opinion/Persuasive
- Using STRONG WORDS to evoke emotions in our reader.
- Writing strong conclusions
- Your child will choose his/her idea for their final published piece next week. We will use this idea to grow our writing into a finished Persuasive Writing Essay!
Science: Plants
- We are watching our Wisconsin Fast Plants grow and develop.
- We are reading about plants, taking notes, and gathering new information. When we finish, students will write a test using the information they learned. They will give the test to a friend.
Math: Unit 6 - More Operations
We finished the Unit 5 Math test yesterday, February 7. I will grade it over the weekend and return it on Monday, February 11.
