"Things to learn while having fun! Lot's to do in 201!"

Room 201

Hi Parents,
We finished our first week of ISAT's! Yay! Reflecting back on the week, I think it was one of the most memorable weeks I have had this year. We tried to take the stress away from the testing sessions by having themed days. It made everyone laugh a bit to see the their favorite team jersey, wacky socks, or thinking cap. The students were attentive, worked hard, and worked well independently to complete work throughout the week. The students showed significant responsibility in all that was asked of them and made their teachers proud. They are truly maturing, gaining confidence, and taking pride in their work.

Mr. Bartunek, our music teacher, told us about Make It Better's "The Sound of Music" Sing-to-Win Ticket Giveaway contest. Many of the students in our class are familiar with the Sound of Music songs, so we decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the flexibility and creativity put forth in making our video. What fun we had practicing it over and over to get it "just right".

We will be filming our final shot on Monday, then we will upload it to Youtube. We would appreciate your assistance in helping us win. The most viewed YouTube video is the big winner, so be sure to view it and ask family and friends to enjoy it as well. With any "luck" we will "March" into the lead, but we know the competition is tough.

Week Two:
"Mismatch Monday" 3/10
Get dressed in the dark or put our favorite pieces together. Who cares if they match!
"Travel Tuesday" 3/11
Have a favorite t-shirt from a vacation or just a favorite place? Wear it on Tuesday!

On Wednesday, March 12, all the 5th grade classes will be attending the musical, Xanadu, at the Junior High. The will be leaving at 1:00 and returning around 2:45. Permission slips will be going home on Monday, so please return as soon as possible. Thanks!

Have a nice weekend!

Our Learning This Week.....

This week in Math, the students worked on dividing decimals, estimating decimals, and solving word problems with decimals. There will be a 99.9% chance that our Chapter 9 test to be next Friday, March 14.
Singapore Maths: Primary 5 - Approximation and Estimation of Decimals

Writers' Workshop

This week in Writers' Workshop, the students completed their Op/Ed piece by checking for reasons and opinions in their papers. They also took time to peer edit. They needed to keep track of a word count and quickly realized that it is harder to write a shorter piece since you need to choose your words carefully.
We also took some time to write and decorate a short piece titled, "What's Worth More to You Than Gold?" Your child may have come home a bit sparkly, due to all the glitter that we used. (Yes, we apologized to the custodians!)

This week we finished up our Human Body unit with the Circulatory System. The students watched videos, found interesting facts, filled out diagrams, and completed online quizzes.
