IVP's Message
The biennium is marching to a close in July. Wow! It has flown by. I did sneak in a little vaca to the beach in Florida recently after an illness. I came home refreshed and relaxed. Your S/P/N leaders are working on many things this month to prepare for their roles at the International Convention. S/P/N Officers have many duties their like the Membership Seminar, the Leadership Parade for the 3 Ps, the International Chapter of Presidents meeting, a 5 slide ppt for me to use about your S/P/N at the Regional Luncheon, mailing a charm that represents your S/P/N to me for the new Regional President's bracelet, and attending the Regional Celebration, the Banquet and Reception. If you know of any attending who are past S/P/N Presidents then they sign up for the Little Wigs Tea. Note: We refer to the replacement for the IVP as the RPE. So I am a member of the last of the IVPs in Alpha Delta Kappa history. The times they are a changin if you remember that song. Change isn't easy, but we can handle it. We are encouraging more Toolkit series to teach more about the technology, etc., to new leaders. The main thing if you are applying for a leadership role in your S/P/N is to have a gmail address just for Alpha Delta Kappa mail and a laptop for all the zooms. Phones and ipads don't have the same controls so others have a hard time helping you on a zoom if you have problems. But many use them and become proficient. A laptop allows you to have Word and Google docs and to search those files. It has a better file system. Most new laptops have a camera built in, but older ones will need for you to purchase a usb camera, but they don't cost much. And if you are still teaching, all this equipment can come off your income tax. I hope many of you will step on up to offer for offices on the S/P/N boards. You meet sisters from all over the region and all over your state or nation. Then attending the conferences and conventions extends your networking even to other nations.
As spring blows in with unpredictabe weather, I hope you enjoy the sunny days and the beautiful flowers. Since St Patrick's Day is this Friday, I leave you with an Irish Blessing,
Fraternally,
Rachel Shankles IVP SCR 21-23

ITE -International Teacher Education Spotlight by Sherryl Longhofer, ITE Board Chair '21-'23
Well as time is quickly winding down for another successful year with
our ITE Scholars, I want to start off by reflecting on my words I first gave to
our scholars who were beginning a whole new chapter in their lives.
Moving away from home, families and friends could leave a void in their
lives that needed to be filled.
The following words I hoped would give them comfort and security in the
decisions they had chosen for their futures and the future of their countries:
“Lighthouses stand at the edge of things. They’re a symbol for our
desire to push outward but to always have that security of a way back
home.”
Way back home, sound familiar? Hopefully you have had time to view our
Virtual Celebration back in January, “There’s No Place Like Home” and
perhaps can make the connection to not only our ITE Scholars who have
left their homes, but for any one of us. Nothing gives us more comfort than
opening the doors to our homes and feeling the familiarity of returning to
the place we lovingly call “home”.
In the January celebration, we also connected with our International
theme, home is where we will be celebrating our 75 th Anniversary in Kansas
City, Missouri. The home of where our Alpha Delta Kappa got it’s very
beginning back in 1947. What an exciting time, as we all agree “there’s no
place like home “and Kansas City is indeed the home of Alpha Delta
Kappa.
As Ruth Walsh, our oldest living Past International President from
Connecticut, stated in our June KAPPAN, “Home is where the heart is”.
Another analogy for what our 75 th Anniversary means to all of us.
By now you are probably asking yourself, so what does my lighthouse
and our scholars have in common with our upcoming celebration in July.
Well, when our scholars come to the United States from their home
countries, they leave their hearts, their families, the familiarity, and comfort
of being home behind them. Longing to be back home, homesickness and
even a feeling of loneliness may affect some of our scholars.
I have been fascinated with lighthouses for many years and even had a
large lighthouse in my counseling office. As a former elementary guidance
counselor, I often used the definition and symbolism for what a lighthouse
represents .a guiding light to safely bring home those who may have fallen
from their paths. Our scholars push outward in bettering their education
and know they have the security of finding their ways back home. We, the
ITE Board want our scholars to know we are here for them and will do
whatever it takes to make their time with us a most enjoyable experience.
Well, my beloved Alpha Delta Kappa sisters, I can hardly wait to see
you in person and to be able to give you a big hug when we return “home”
in Kansas City this summer.
As this will probably be my last article for the IVP newsletters I want to
take this time to thank you all for helping to make my past six years on the
ITE Board the most educational and memorable experience of my life.
Sending best wishes, sisterly love and many Kansas hugs to each and
everyone of you,
Sherryl Longhofer, International Teacher Education
Board Chair, 2021-2023
Special Message for S/P/N Presidents from Judy Barnhill, Convention Chaplain
Attention Chapter Presidents,
Please make certain that you have checked your rosters and edited
the names of those who have joined the Omega Chapter since June 1,
2021. We want to make sure that each sister is honored by having her
name listed in the memorial service program. Chapter Presidents
should be able to make necessary changes on the chapter rosters listed
on the online directory. Use the filer and change from Active lisings to Omega.
If you have questions, Suzie Hannah is probably
able to help you at Headquarters if you call. Please make these updates and
changes by May 1,2023 in order for international to print the names for the memorial
service program. Thank you for your assistance with this very important
task.
Judy Barnhill, TN Beta Zeta, 2023 International Convention Chaplain
Dear State Chairs,
Hello Sisters, hope this email finds you all and your families doing well.
Your doing a fabulous and meaningful job of encouragement and assistance in being there for your Chapter Chairs as they are busy turning in their Altruistic Reports.
Way to GO State Chairs!!
Great, wonderful reports are being sent in to headquarters. As you receive, and view the copy of your Chapters Reports I'm sure you would agree with me that these Chapters truly have an Altruistic Heart! in all that our sisters are doing for others, to better the lives of so many.
Please continue these efforts for your sisters as Chapter Reports continue to be sent to headquarters.
Reminding them that the last day to send in their report for a "Pearl" for their Chapter is March 15th.
(By chance a Chapter sends in their report to headquarters, and it is received on March 16th., I'm sorry no "Pear" earned for that Chapter).
Let's continue to work together in the name of Altruism for Alpha Delta Kappa in order to do as much as we can for Chapters/Sisters in the South Central Region.
If you see/view a Chapter Report that is showing only zero's in the questions asked on the Chapter Jotform my suggestion is possibly your State Membership Chair be contacted. In helping this particular Chapter, in showing & sharing sisterly Love with them would be the reason I'm making this suggestion.
*I'm here to help in anyway, just please contact me.
As well here is information and a training tool/file attachment for You, State Chairs to review as you get ready to send me your State Altruistic Reports. Due March 15th.
