Aloha High School
9/23/2022
Warrior Nation,
What a fantastic start to the year. Our students have been great and there’s so much more positive energy than we had last year. Thank you for helping to make this happen.
This year, we have recommitted to a couple practices we know help students succeed and we’ve a couple new ones. One of our new efforts, aimed at equipping our students for all the realities of today’s world, is a partnership with CharacterStrong - an organization that provides curriculum around social & emotional skills for staff and students. The focus of their high school work is around 3 main outcomes: increasing a sense of belonging for all students, improving skills that support student well-being, and deepening student engagement in their academics, in their school, and in their community.
Here’s what the data tells us:
- A sense of belonging in school is one of the most important conditions for learning and a fundamental support for social and emotional well-being. In national surveys, nearly 1⁄3 of all students report a weak sense of belonging in their schools. Roughly half of 6th - 12th grade students say they don’t enjoy coming to school most of the time.
- Mental health challenges for teens have been increasing and 7 out of 10 teens in the U.S. (between 13 and 17 years old) have named anxiety or depression as a major problem among their peers.
- Student engagement drives learning and supports school success.

Warrior Wellness Center
PURPOSE of the Wellness Center:
To support students in crisis and in learning skills for managing emotional dysregulation, stress, and anxiety. We are located in C-2, a space designed to be soft on the senses, big on comfort and care.
HOW:
We encourage students to check in to their classes before coming to the WC.
Students sign-in electronically, generating an auto-email to their current teacher to notify they've arrived to the WC, and again once they're leaving.
Most students will take no longer than about 10-15 minutes to regroup, with guidance or without. Some situations may warrant a longer stay, but we are very mindful of the importance of being in class!
