From the Desk of the High School Principal-Mr. Tom Roote
Starting in January, Mrs. Robyn Ross-Squirrell will take on a new challenge. She is leaving Newark High School to follow her dream of working at the elementary level. She will be assisting Mr. Hamelinck at the Kelley School and Ms. Prinzi at the Middle School. This puts her in a position to work with students in grades 3-8; an ever-present goal for her! During her time at NHS Mrs. Ross has been instrumental in developing a tone in the building whereby positivity rules over a punitive approach. She spends most of her days working closely with kids and families to restore peace given one challenge or another. I have grown very fond of her habit for pivoting to the niceties that often go unnoticed until they are gone. For example, she is first to call and check on a student or colleague that went home sick or to add a bit of décor to the main office bathroom. You will be missed my partner…my friend. When asked for a memory, others shared:
- Robyn has been so kind and supportive this semester! Her support has meant a great deal to me as I've adjusted to being in a new building this year. Courtney
- Robyn has been a great teammate in the main office. My transition to a high school administrator would not have gone so well if not for Mrs. Ross. She will do great things in the Middle School and at the Kelley School. Jason
- On one of ‘those days,’ when the admin people were really dealing with ‘front line’ issues, I would say to her ‘ a great day not to be a VP!’ Sometimes she laughed-sometimes she gave me the look I bet Nero had before tossing prisoners to the lions-but she always had good advice to help me diffuse some of those student issues. You’ll be missed! Mike

The power and responsibility of choice:
As I have walked through classrooms this fall, I notice teachers offering opportunities in how and what students are learning. From simple things like the multi-levels of seating options to the more elaborate selection of assessments. Research supports the idea that having ownership in their education helps students remain engaged. Today I sat in a class as a teacher was brainstorming ways for the course to be more successful. The discussion brought out the idea of having a choice. As an observer, I noticed a change in the demeanor of the class as they explored this possibility.
Having a choice for students also increases their responsibility. Students must now push themselves to a productive struggle. The productive struggle is when the learner gets frustrated while they learn, but feel a greater sense of accomplishment when they are finished. The following link is about the productive struggle:

Ms. Yatteau, "We have received a huge donation of dress shirts. All size large, all name brand, all freshly dry cleaned. I know that Reds Threads will not go through this many shirts in a life time, therefore I am putting it out there for you. The shirts are in my room, please feel free to come down and shop. PLEASE. If you like Brooks Brothers, Orvis, Banana Republic please stop by. Change up your wardrobe, Have a little cheer for the holiday season.....come on down......surprise your significant other with a little mid December gift.....seriously....come get a shirt or 10.....and I also got 10-15 suits from the same donor, need a suit....come on down and try it on....."

Social Emotional Learning and the Plan for Excellence
As we are closing in on our holiday break and the new year, often resolutions come to mind. Think about an aspect of your like that you’d like to change. Perhaps you desire for a better work-life balance, or you feel physically unhealthy and want to make exercise and dietary changes in your life. What are the first ideas of how to make these changes?
If you are like most people, you might have started thinking about things you don’t want to do anymore. Maybe you thought, I have to leave work by 3:15pm every day, I need to get to the gym five days a week, or I’ve got to stop eating bags of potato chips for dinner. Your mind most likely identified many behaviors that are getting in the way of your hopes and goals. This is what most of us do when we’re beginning to make changes, and it comes with some limitations and drawbacks. We can focus on what isn’t working and do less of it, or we can focus on what is working and do more of that. Ideally, we do a bit of both, but if we start with what is working, we can galvanize energy to make change.
When we focus on the bright spots – on what we want to see more of – it doesn’t mean that we deny challenges. A strengths-based approach to change works because when we look at our strengths and what’s going well, we gain confidence in ourselves, we can harness our positive feelings, and we can direct that positive energy to areas that are most challenging. Continue to focus on the bright spots in your classrooms, this can help provide the energy we all need to continue making great transformations in our classrooms!

· Lindsay Engels works very diligently with Alt School students to see their success.
· Haley Curley & Stacey Brewer went above and beyond to help a fellow teacher learn Quizziz.
· Lindsay Walters, Becca Yuhas, Billie Jo Ross for supporting our students and staff by organizing the Angel Tree!
· Alex Hennessy held a leadership position by coaching Unified Bowling.
· Shannon Hersh stays late with Chelsea Fladd and attends sporting events for students, also on the weekend for tournaments!
· Jason Dentel checks in regularly and stops down to teachers who need assistance with Tier 2/3 students as well as just to say "hello".
· Robyn Ross always offers a realistic point of view when dealing with difficult situations with students.
· Vicki McBride cares about the success of her students and checks in daily with teachers on how students can be successful and improve their grades.
· Justin Fladd calls home when his student athletes are absent to check in on them because he cares beyond the court.
· John Dalton for always having his door open to help his colleagues.
· Jamie Breithaupt for planning double classes.
· Sending THANK YOUS and APPRECIATION to all the staff that contributed to making the ANGEL TREE a success!
