FMS Counseling: Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo

Needing to see the counselor?

Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chromebooks by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. If you have any questions or need help finding the form refer to the email that was sent today (Friday) from Mrs. Horstmeier. You can also ask your teacher for help. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time.

Megan Meier Foundation Assemblies at FMS

We write today to inform and invite you to a very important awareness and educational event at our school with Tina Meier. Tina is a nationally acclaimed cybersafety speaker whose daughter took her own life at age 13 following a severe cyberbullying attack provoked by an adult neighbor. We hear time and time again that one of your greatest fears as a parent is the possibility that your child could be victimized or harmed online. Therefore, we continue to try and provide parents and youth information aimed to proactively protect and prevent these concerns from becoming reality. Megan’s story provides students with real, first-hand knowledge of the impact of bullying and cyberbullying for the purpose of building empathetic understanding. The presentation will provide your child up-to-date information about the potential online and offline dangers. Additionally, students will be empowered to be the solution and say “NO” to bullying in our school. All content will be adjusted for age-appropriateness. Tina is the Founder and Executive Director of the Megan Meier Foundation (www.meganmeierfoundation.org). Following the loss of her daughter, Tina made it her personal mission to speak out about her daughter’s experiences with bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide. She has presented to over 300,000 students, parents, educators, and professionals since 2008 and has participated in national anti-bullying campaigns including the Presidential Conference on Bullying Prevention at the invitation of The White House and the U.S. Department of Education. We are truly excited about Tina’s visit and anticipate this to be a very beneficial experience for our students. Our programs will be on Monday, October 1st and we will have a 6th grade program starting at 8:20 a.m. and a 7th and 8th grade program starting at 9:55 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend. Should you have any questions regarding this program, please do not hesitate to contact our offices.

News from the Art Room

6th Grade:

Students this week will begin our new objective:

ELO: 1 Students will select and apply media, techniques, and processes.

FA1 Using opaque paint to overlap brush strokes to create a smooth even area FA2- Identify and demonstrate color value.

Students will practice watercolor techniques and focus on layer as well as other effects. Students will design and select six different fruit combinations and place them into a panel grid with work on background and color emphasis.

We will spend about three weeks on this content.

7th Grade:

Students are beginning work on our next objective:

ELO: 1 Students will select and apply media, techniques and processes to solve challenging visual art problems.

FA1- using pencil to create simulated and implied texture. Create an original artwork that communicates nature. FA2-Identify the use of implied and simulated texture. Identify and demonstrate value and a range of values.

Students will be studying old barns and landscapes. Students will be looking at and practicing the use of value and discovering how to create texture with various line and shading techniques. We will be very drawing intensive for the next several weeks. Students will make several drawings of their “old Barns” and place emphasis on the layering work it takes to build up a finalized drawing. These often turn out amazing and challenge students to think about value, and perspective as well.

8th Grade:

We are wrapping up lesson 2 and will continue to do more work in portrait study
Lesson 2: American Gothic Reimagined
Objective: ELO 4: Students will explain the connections between art and the world around them

Students will continue working to create a parody of Grant Wood's "American Gothic". Students will work to recreate the portrait with their own modernized ideas. This will be a portrait study with three required subjects in the artwork. This is always a fun project, which allows students creative freedom. Students will also do a portrait study and do practice on facial features in a six panel as a breakdown component of this lesson. I feel the extra drawing practice is crucial for them to fully understand the visual literacy component, and more challenging part of this objective.

Proficiency Scales: For Art Project Based Curriculum Scoring are as follows.

Curriculum Marks for Standards Based Grading and Proficiency are available to view on the Parent Portal in SIS. See below!

Art Club will now meet every 1st Wednesday of the month. After our initial meeting this was felt by the students to work so much better. Our next meeting will be October 3rd and I will put out an additional calendar next week for the additional dates. Thank you so much for understanding as we enter new territory.

Thanks for the support, and as always if you have any questions or concerns, please email me cchapman@fulton58.org

Artfully yours,

Mr. Chapman
