Counseling and Music Spotlight
April and May 2017
April and May Classroom Topics
In April, we wrapped up our last lesson using the STEP problem solving method. The link below is an electronic copy of the model used in the classrooms.
In grades K-3, we will be focusing on career exploration during the month of May. In Kindergarten, we talked about different careers and the clothes and supplies they need to complete their jobs. In grades 1-3, we completed interest surveys on our iPads and were matched with an extensive list of careers that cater to our interests.
The fourth and fifth grade students were participants of our annual Career Fair, which took place in March.

Family Nurturing Center: Kids on the Block program
Our third grade classrooms viewed a puppet show about recognizing what constitutes bullying behavior and correct ways of responding to it.
Our Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade classrooms viewed the Kids On The Block puppet show. This show focuses on recognizing different types of child abuse, identifying safe people to talk to and ways to get help.
Counseling Services
The role of a school counselor focuses primarily on prevention programs. These prevention services include; whole school programming, monthly classroom guidance lessons, small behavior-specific groups, consultation with staff members, crisis-intervention and brief solution-focused counseling services. Due to my scope of practice, I am unable to provide on-going and long term mental health services to our students. If you would like information about these services or mental health providers in our area, I would be happy to assist you.
Music with Mrs. Scaggs
We have been busy making amazing music in our classrooms this semester. Here are some examples of what we have created/performed.
Kindergarten
We created Tempo videos using Draw and Tell and Do Ink. (All of the class videos are on See Saw and Schoology.)
First Grade
On Tuesday, April 18th the first grade performed the musical “Swamped!” for a full house. Thank you to all of the teachers, parents, staff, Woodfill staff for a great production. (see more pictures on Schoology)
Second Grade
First and second grade had a visit from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra – a woodwind Quintet. We learned about timbre, sound production and heard some wonderful music, even some parts of Peter and the Wolf, the unit that second grade is working on and some of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the unit the first grade is working on.
Third Grade
The classrooms enjoyed their final visit with The Schoolhouse Symphony. It was all about dance music through the ages. This group presented a program 4 times this school year. Thank you to the PTO for funding this program for our kids.
Grades 3-5
Students have been working on learning to play the Recorder. We use a system called “Recorder Karate.” It works very similar to Karate classes. Students learn to play a song. When ready, they show me their skills in a test. If they pass, their recorder wears the belt. Then students begin learning the next level’s skills. Those in 3rd and 5th grade, that passed the black belt, played on the morning announcements. Congratulations to all for working hard to learn a new instrument. (4th grade are working on Recorder Karate now and will have a chance to play on the announements the last Friday of school.)
Kentucky All State Chorus
Moyer had two students chosen to participate in the Kentucky All State Chorus. This contest is extremely challenging, with over 700 students, grades 5 and 6, from across the state trying for the prestigious 200 places in the choir. Congratulations to Reese Dunbar and Ava Meyer. They performed with the group on February 9, 2017 in Louisville, KY.
