Barre Blast
March 8, 2016
Greetings from RLS!
Since I last wrote to you on February 1st, so much has happened in the life of our school! Two early release days packed with teacher learning, two snow days, our 4th grade Constitution Celebration, Music Festivals galore, a vacation week, an in class Constitution Celebration and last, but certainly not least, Dr Seuss Week! I hope you are following RLS on Facebook and/or Instagram so you can share in the wonder of what it means to be a member of this learning community!
As you know, last week we had Dr. Seuss Week and part of our celebration was a school-wide Mystery Reader Contest. My mom and sister were our surprise guests on Friday and read one of our family favorites - Giraffes Can't Dance - to each class. One of my goals since I started at RLS was to get to know the children and for them to get to know me. Reading aloud to classes allows me to do this as I share some of my favorite books and little tid bits about me as I read. So far the children have learned about my favorite color, favorite flower, favorite state, favorite summer spot and favorite childhood activity. And now they've met some of my family! All of these discussions become conversation starters as children then have connections to share therefore building our relationships!
I had such fun sharing my family with my RLS family. The children were able to ask us questions after we read. The kids were a riot asking everything from "What was the worst trouble Ms. V got in when she was in school?" to "What was your favorite vacation?" and "Have you ever swum in a pool?" It was a lasting memory for my mom, my sister and me and I hope the kids enjoyed it too. Both my mom and sister were impressed by how respectful, kind and caring the kids were - you all would have been proud as they represented our community well!
I hope to see many of you at this week's PTO sponsored Movie Night - it is sure to be another successful event! As always, if you have any questions or concerns or something to share, please do not hesitate to give me a call, send an email or stop by!
Regards,
Julie
Dr. Seuss Week a Great Success!
