July 2021

The Celebration that COULD!

We look forward to our Graduation Celebration all year--it is such a highlight to step back from the hard work & challenges and appreciate all that these children have accomplished. The kids love receiving their medals and being applauded by everyone (this year, with an actual cheering squad!), and we hear so many reports from parents about the importance of this event.

Although a global pandemic and torrential thunderstorms have tried to cancel our plans the past few years, we have found ways to adapt, whether it be via a virtual platform or a last-minute location change. We appreciate everyone's flexibility as plans were re-routed, for since we are so committed to this event, we would do anything not to cancel. Let's hope (fingers crossed) that next year's event can be planned with a little less existential drama!

The celebration was our first in-person event in over a year, and we are excited to have so many more to come this summer! Read below to see what we have planned during these summer months and how you can join us!

Quarterly Virtual Happy Hour: Fri, July 9th

Set aside this hour for you! Everyone is welcome: Moms, Dads, Professionals, Family, Friends! We get together quarterly to unwind at the end of the week and make some connections within our community using this casual format. We use the most recent Collaborative Blog Post to get the conversation going, but then we follow wherever it may lead. An RSVP is required, either on the Facebook Event Page ("interested" or "going") or via email if you're not on social media, and a zoom link is sent out a few hours before the call.

RSVP for our next call on Friday, July 9th at 8:00pm

And mark your calendars for the last 2021 date: Friday, Oct. 8th at 8:00pm

C.I.T.Y. in the park playdates

Our Local Leaders are hosting park playdates in different areas around the city. This is the perfect way to safely gather outdoors and meet other families in your neighborhood who also have children in therapy. Find the one near you or travel to them all!

Kendra Scott Event: Sat, July 17th

Need a reason to shop for some beautiful jewelry? The Kendra Scott store at Old Orchard Mall is hosting a fundraiser event where 20% of the proceeds will go back to C.I.T.Y. of Support. You can participate online with the online promo code: GIVEBACK-ACPDB. Or better yet, join us in-person for an afternoon of shopping, sipping, and socializing on Saturday, July 17th from 12:00-2:00.

Family Fun Baseball Game: Wed, Aug. 11th

Roots Autism Solutions & Therapeutic Academy is sponsoring the Schaumburg Boomers' annual Autism Awareness Night on Wednesday, August 11th, and they have chosen C.I.T.Y. of Support to be the recipient of fundraising efforts on that night! Tickets must be purchased through THIS LINK in order to count towards our total donations. ALL are welcome...please share the link with your friends!!

We would love for C.I.T.Y. of Support to have a great showing that night. Together, we'll enjoy a family-friendly summer night out, watch some baseball, and connect with others in our C.I.T.Y!

C.I.T.Y. Close-Ups

Comment on June's C.I.T.Y. Close-Up post in our Facebook Group featuring Ellie by Wednesday night, July 14th at 11:59 pm for YOUR chance to win a photography session in July! A winner will be randomly selected and announced on Thursday, July 15th. We love to celebrate successes with you (whatever they may be!).

Meet Ellie

Her mom says:

"When Ellie was diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss at one month old, we were shocked and scared. We'd never met a deaf person before and didn't know what to expect. She was fitted with hearing aids at 3 months old and we began Aural Rehab therapy through EI. At 9 months, she received her first cochlear implant and at 12 months her second. At one year, she added speech to her list of therapies and joined a Toddler Group for kids with hearing loss at Child's Voice when she turned 18 months old.

Ellie is currently 33 months old and doing phenomenal! Despite not being able to hear for her first year of life, she's caught up to her chronological age for speech and hitting expressive and receptive language targets for her age group. She's 100% oral/verbal, although we plan to add ASL to her communication. She's social and happy and will be transitioning into preschool in the fall! We couldn't be more proud of her grit, resilience, and fearless personality that makes her capable of being anything she aspires to be."

Accessible Support Collection

C.I.T.Y. of Support is proud to partner with the Arlington Heights Memorial Library in sponsoring an accessible support collection of books and materials that meet the needs of families in our organization. By supporting this program, we are adding to the inclusivity and diversity of our neighborhood, demonstrating the importance of acknowledging and supporting our community of families with children in therapy.

We need your help!! What would you want to see included in this special collection? Books for children, books for parents, adaptive toys/tools, media products, developmental skill kits...what is on your wishlist? Share your suggestions with us on this form.

This collection in Arlington Heights is our pilot site; however, with continued interest and funding, we would love to sponsor other accessibility collections in libraries all across Chicago.

Thank you, Birthday Buddies in June!
