CMS Bands - September Update
August 31st, 2023
Practice Assignments - #1 Due Tuesday!
Our first Practice Assignment is due TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th at 11:59PM. Practice Assignments are always due on the first day of the week, so Tuesday of next week due to Labor Day. We went through this in class with students but some quick reminders:
- Students must practice for a total of 30 minutes. We highly recommend breaking it down into multiple videos (15 & 15, 20 & 10, etc) to facilitate uploads to Canvas.
- Students need to use the CAMERA function of their Chromebook to record.
- If students cannot upload their videos to Canvas they can show the video to us briefly before class any day. We accept the video for full credit the day after it was due during the school day if students could not upload from home.
- Each video must start with “My name is _____ ______ and this is Practice Assignment number __.” This is to ensure that students are submitting the correct practice assignment—not an old video from a prior assignment. If students do not include that they will lose a point from their assignment.
How Do We Submit Practice Assignments?!?

Band Commitment Form
The Band Commitment Form was due on Monday of this week. It is required that all students turn in this paper with their name, signature, and a parent signature stating that they have read the handbook and agree to abide by the policies in it. We will start hunting down students who haven’t turned it in next week. If your child hasn’t asked you to sign a band paper yet please feel free to ask them about it 😁
CMS Bands Fall Concert
Our first concert of the year is Monday, October 16th!
If your child cannot be there for any reason whatsoever please email me as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly. Students who cannot attend the concert that we are aware of ahead of time are given a makeup assignment to allow them to earn full credit for the performance.

What Do Students Wear at Concerts Again??
The first impression we make as a band is what we look like to our audience. Because of this we require students to wear specific attire:
Concert Bands (6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands)
Option 1: White button down shirt or polo, black pants/skirt, black shoes, black socks
Option 2: All black dress, all black closed toe shoes.
Jazz Band
Given jazz’s less regimented history, students are given more leeway with their concert attire. Students are expected to wear “dress clothes” such as: A suit and tie, dress shirt/tie/slacks, a dress, skirt/blouse. Dress shoes are also expected. No jeans or shorts.
If any issues with the dress code arise please contact Mr. Pobocik or Mr. Day.
NACS Band Extravaganza
Our second performance of the year is at CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL as part of Northwest Allen County Schools' Band Extravaganza featuring almost every band in the district! This does not feature the CMS Jazz Band
If your child cannot be there for any reason whatsoever please email me as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly. Students who cannot attend the concert that we are aware of ahead of time are given a makeup assignment to allow them to earn full credit for the performance.

Need Supplies?
Does your child need supplies for band? If they need reeds, books, valve oil, cleaning supplies, etc. we recommend going through Quinlan & Fabish, since they visit the school weekly to pick up/drop off instruments and supplies. If you order something from them you can have it delivered straight to CMS! You are also more than welcome to go through other area vendors such as Sweetwater and Triple C music.
Upcoming 7th/8th Grade Opportunities
Information will be sent out shortly regarding two opportunities offered to our older students: Pep Band and the Marching Band Experience Night. Our Pep Band plays at 6 CMS basketball games and focuses on popular music. We start rehearsing once a week on Wednesday towards the end of September until mid November, and then meet up only on game days after school.
The Marching Band Experience Night is an evening where students get to hang out at our CHS Marching Band competition and get an inside look at something they will be able to participate in soon!
