WBMS Friday Notes
January 22-25
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
In only four days, much has happened at WBMS! Our 6th graders dug into the writing process as they reflected on feedback they received from Write Score, analyzed their personal strengths and weaknesses, conferenced with peers and their instructor, and then went about revising essays. Our 7th graders were fully enthralled in pig dissection. Watching them carefully slice open the body, explore the cavity as they ohhed and ahhed, and discover the organs was a complete joy. In 8th grade students engaged in an interdisciplinary activity as they constructed argumentative essays on the effectiveness of eliminating discrimination through the Reconstruction Amendments. Lastly, all students participated in a personal safety seminar presented by Revved Up Kids, which I imagine prompted much conversation at home. It hurts my soul our students need this type of training; but while we hope they will never need the information they learned in the safety session, we want to provide them with the necessary tools for even the worst situations. In addition, we celebrated our Webster and FBLA winners. And we wish our Robotics teams and our Tech Fair competitors good luck as the contend this weekend, and we send our best to the cast members of Aladdin as they prepare for the BIG musical production next week. This group has been working extremely hard to create an outstanding show, and I hope you will support them next Friday and Saturday.
Come cheer on our basketball teams tonight as they play at home, enjoy your family time this weekend!

Hat Day to Support Adopt a Jaguar!- 1/31
The Fulton County School System will soon conduct the annual mandated Scoliosis Screening Program on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 to identify children with suspected curvature of the spine. Only sixth and eighth grade students will be screened. According to available information, it is known that two to three children out of every 100 may have Scoliosis. If this condition is detected early and appropriately treated, progressive spine deformity can usually be prevented. A flyer from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta titled “Fast Facts about Scoliosis is attached to provide additional information about scoliosis. In addition, Webb Bridge Middle School will be showing all the 6th and 8th grade students the “Scoli What” video that was developed by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta which discusses scoliosis and the screening process. This video is also available for parents to view at the following link: http://fultontube.fultonschools.org/features/QKpwL93oRco22rnQJMPN.
Your 6th and 8th grade students should be bringing home a permission slip and Facts about Scoliosis on 1/25/19. Please sign and have your student return the permission slip to their homeroom teacher by Thursday January 31st.
All Surfaces Should Be Turned Into the Media Center
Course Recommendations for next year at WBMS
Our teachers are currently engaged in the course recommendation process using The Webb Bridge Indicators of Success. Earlier this year, teachers analyzed student data to re-evaluate these recommendation guidelines specifically for our community; however, they do not replace the district course guidelines. These course recommendations will be sent home with students on Tuesday, February 5th and are due back on Tuesday, February 12th. It is important to review your student’s course recommendations at this time. You will be able to indicate a change to your student’s schedule if you feel it is warranted and fits within the county guidelines. Please know this is the first round of course recommendations, and teachers will revisit students’ recommended placement in May and make changes, if necessary, based on second semester progress. Here is a copy of both the WBMS Indicators of Success and the county guidelines: Middle School Initial Placement Guidelines 2019-2020 Indicators of Success 1-17-19.xlsx
Navigating Course Placement Parent University
We want to educate and partner with our parent community throughout this process; thus, we will be hosting a Parent University “Navigating Course Placement” on Thursday, February 7th from 6:15 – 7:30. It will begin in the WBMS gym for a general overview of the recommendation process and content class offerings. Parents will then have the opportunity to select break-out sessions hosted by our teachers for more in depth information on specific subjects. Please mark this date on your calendar and join us for a night of learning.

CALLING ALL TALENTED PEOPLE OF WEBB BRIDGE!!
Do you have an amazing talent that you want to share with our school community? If so, you need to consider auditioning for the 2019 Talent Show! The show is happening on Friday, March 22nd. The Talent Show committee really wants this year’s show to include a wide variety of acts. In years past we have had Chinese yo-yo performances, Bollywood dancing, piano playing, singing, comedians, and rock bands just to name a few. But our show is NOT limited to these types of acts. Students who are interested in auditioning for the show, MUST attend ONE of the information meetings taking place on Wednesday, January 23rd. There is one at 8:00 AM and one at 4:15 PM and both meetings will be held in Mr. Bernhardt’s room #813. Again, you only have to attend one of those meetings and if you come to the after school meeting, you must have a ride ready to pick you up from school by 4:45. If you have any questions, Mr. Bernhardt can be reached via email to bernhardtc1@fultonschools.org.
Media Center – Changes in Overdue Books policies
As the purpose of overdue notices (and consequences) is to have library materials returned promptly to the media center so they are available to all students, we are changing our media center fine policies effective this semester. The grace period for overdues is being extended, which will mean that students will be notified through their homeroom teachers that their books are overdue before fines accrue, so they may either return or renew their books. To avoid large fines, as well as make students and parents more aware that the book should be returned promptly, a book will be marked as lost 45 days after it becomes overdue and the full replacement price of the book will appear on the fine notice. As always, students have the opportunity to bring in canned or boxed foods (at 50c per item) to pay off fines or they may work off the fines with any teacher or the media center. Lost items will need to be replaced with the same item (hardcover of same title) or an online payment made. Thanks to you, parents and guardians, for helping your children return our media center materials promptly so they may check out new items!
WBMS Track Team
The WBMS Track Team will have tryouts on February 7, 11, and 12. Information packets are available outside of the gym. Any interested 7th or 8th grade students must have all paperwork completed in order to tryout. All forms are also located on the WBMS website. See Coach Sell for questions.
