Concentration Camps
Olivia Axland
Introduction
What do you know about concentration camps? Have you ever seen or heard of Francine Christophe?
Background
Concentration camps, or labor camps, were an integral part of the massacre and oppression of Jews, political enemies, and anyone else deemed racially or socially unacceptable.
Under this category, alongside Jews, were political prisoners, homosexuals, disabled or the elderly, and Jehovah's Witnesses.
Only Jews were targeted for systematic murder (i.e., the employment of gas chambers, shooting), but the vast majority of people sent to death camps died due to overwork, exhaustion, starvation, and diseases such as typhus, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and dysentery.
