Updates from Manassas Park Middle School - 11/2/2018
Week 10 complete, Quarter 2 has begun!
A reminder - from last week's newsletter:
Parent Teacher Conference Day! Tuesday, November 6th is election day (please vote!) and Parent Teacher Conference Day. Our teachers will be receiving training from 10:00-2:30, then we welcome parents to visit MPMS from 2:30-6:00. I recommend emailing any teachers you want to make sure you see and setting an appointment up. Please keep each visit with a teacher to no more than 10 minutes in order to ensure all parents have an opportunity to meet.
Desserts Requested! From 1:30-2:30 on Conference Day, teachers will be eating lunch at the Middle School. It would be wonderful if parents could donate desserts for teachers. Please turn them in to the main office on Monday or Tuesday (Nov 5 or 6).
The 7th Grade will be going on a field trip on Nov. 8th! Next week permission slips will be going out for all 7th grade students. We have the opportunity for the entire grade to travel to the Hylton Performing Arts Center to see the play Abira and the Mountain - which is a fairy tale about inclusion, acceptance, and loving yourself. All students must have a signed permission slip to go on the trip, so please talk with your 7th grader to get those in ASAP. This trip is FREE for students - a wonderful opportunity for exposure to a beautiful performance venue that's just next door.

It's getting colder... Dress Code Reminders and a Request to Keep Blankets at Home
-Heads Uncovered (unless it is a religious head covering)
-Torsos Covered (from hips to shoulders)
-Wear appropriate footwear
Some students have also been bringing blankets to school. While there are no rules against blankets in school, seeing students wrap themselves in a blanket that was previously dragged on the floor is concerning to me. Blankets being carried all day are exposed to to dirt, dust, allergens, and possibly pests such as spiders, lice, or bed bugs that can then be carried into your homes. Especially if students are using a blanket that they sleep with at home, this is a concern.
Please talk with your children about dressing for the weather and check to see what they wear when they go out the door in the morning. Wear a coat when it is cold and store it in a locker during the day. Keep blankets at home, not dragged on the floor of school.
If you are in need of winter clothing, please contact Ms. Salas in the school counseling office - we have donations brought in for students on a regular basis, as well as being offered to families that attend Family Market. No charge, we just want everyone dressed comfortably for the weather!

A note from Nurse VonVital!
Please remember to maintain current school health records. At the beginning of every school year students, with known allergies to food and /or insects stings, asthma, or seizure disorder, need health plans to be completed by their parent/guardian and physician. In the event of an allergic reaction, asthma attack or seizure during school hours, this form provides step by step directions as to how to manage each child’s condition. With that said, please update emergency contacts, and phone numbers. If you have any questions regarding your child’s health, please feel free to contact me.
Winter Sports Tryouts!
Winter Season 1 tryouts!
Tryouts for winter cheer and girls basketball start on November 7th.

Sports Physical Forms can be found in the main office and completed by any local clinic, Patient First, or pediatrician. The physical must be completed on the VHSL forms provided. Without a physical, students cannot try out for a school team.
