Counseling Corner...Aaannnd, we're back.
Greetings LAVCA Family,
Welcome! We hope you all had a break that gave you an opportunity to reset and regroup. We wanted to share several things with returning and new students regarding taking action in the spring 2016 semester. Students, Learning Coaches and/or Parents, please be prepared to press “PLAY” so we can experience a positive learning environment full of action that will yield award winning results. We were thinking of some things that we could share that can play a part in an action packed semester.
· Please check your K-mail daily.
· Create a schedule in regards to attending sessions, completing coursework, and meeting deadlines.
· Communicate with teachers, staff, and administration.
· Communicate with other students, learning coaches, and parents for tips.
· Use available learning resources (Live Help, Math on Demand, etc.)
· Please don’t hesitate to ask questions.
· Try to attend as many scheduled monthly outings as possible. Let’s meet, greet, talk, share ideas, reunite, and grow as a family!
· Returning families, please don’t hesitate to reach out to each other and to new families regarding the action packed techniques and strategies which produce success and growth.
· New families, it is important to stay focused, establish routine to yield structure and progress, and to never hesitate to ask questions. If you haven’t already, visit http://www.k12.com/take-a-peek/day-in-the-life.html for ideas and tips.
Lastly, but important, please be aware of signs and symptoms of stress or the feeling overwhelmed. This can be experienced by students, learning coaches, parents, teachers, staff, and administration. You can use the link listed below to visit the Stress Management Center presented by WebMD to find resources regarding stress and how to handle it. http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/default.htm
Our ongoing engagement, support, and encouragement will play a significant role in the student’s learning, growth, and success. Let’s take action together. We are here to provide support! We hope you have an awesome and action packed semester!

A Note From Ms. Deville, Our Special Programs Manager:
McKinnney-Vento Act:
If you lost your housing and now live in a shelter, motel, vehicle, camping ground, or temporary trailer; on the street; doubled-up with family or friends; or in another type of temporary or inadequate housing, your child might be able to receive help through a federal law called the McKinney-Vento Act.
Your eligible children have the right to:
· Receive a free, appropriate public education.
· Enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment.
· Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents.
· Enroll in the local school; or continue attending their school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or the school in which they were last enrolled), if that is your preference and is feasible.
§ If the school district believes that the school you select is not in the best interest of your children, then the district must provide you with a written explanation of its position and inform you of your right to appeal its decision.
· Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if you request this.
· Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to your children’s needs.
If you need further assistance with your children’s educational needs, contact
