December Newsletter 2022
Principal's Message
Hello Franklin families,
Just lots of little notes for everyone…this is a busy, busy time at school and we hope to see you at one of the many events.
1. Thank you to everyone who attended Turkey Bingo! It was our largest crowd ever! We gave out over 40 turkeys and ham, plus all the fixings and families had a great time. Every family was a winner. Thank you to the Franklin staff, who donate all the food and money to make this event happen. If you did not attend, try to come next year; it is a great night of fun for the entire family.
2. On November 30th, we will have our second Intervention/Enrichment time for your student as we continue to celebrate the students who are doing well and support those who need it.
3. Speaking of grades, midterm grades will be due the week of December 8th. Parents are encouraged to check student grades on Skyward. Middle school students are developing organizational skills to handle several subjects and teachers. It is challenging for them, and they need to stay under their parents’ watchful eyes. If you need to meet with a teacher, feel free to email them directly. We value the partnership. Your student should be able to connect you to any of their teachers by email and/or to their grades.
4. Fall concerts are on December 6th and 8th. We look forward to our nights of music. Please remember to respect all our singers and musicians by staying for the entire concert- the students have worked hard, and this is their chance to show all of you what they have accomplished.
5. Winter break starts December 16th. Please note that students come back on TUESDAY, January 3rd.
In closing, I would like to announce that I shall be returning to school with the students in January. I would like to thank all of you for your patience, cards, and emails over the past several months. My heartfelt gratitude to my staff who have had to step up and adjust in my absence-especially my Assistant Principal Andrew Espindola, who has been Interim Principal in my absence. He has done a masterful job. He will continue to run the building up until my return.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Principal Anderson
Classroom Spotlight
Ms. Vasquez' 8th grade Language Arts classes have recently been writing creative, suspenseful narratives and book reports. What is a narrative you may ask? A narrative essay tells a story. In most cases, this is a story about a personal experience you had. This type of essay, along with the descriptive essay, allows you to get personal and creative, unlike most academic writing.
Strengthening Families Program-Starting in January 2023
The Strengthening Families Program is for Parents and Youth 10-14. It has made a difference in thousands of families in all 50 states and in over 25 countries. Open to all Yakima School District Middle School parents and students.
Parents want to protect their children, but it's challenging. Youth need skills to help them resist the peer pressure that leads to risky behaviors. Research shows that protective parenting improves family relationships and decreases the level of family conflict, contributing to lower levels of substance use.

PBIS NEWS
BOLT STORE OPEN
We have opened our PBIS BOLT Store. We encourage teachers to recognize positive behavior daily by giving students our PBIS Rewards incentive called a BOLT. Students can collect BOLTS and spend them at our BOLT Store, which will be open every Friday.
Our Grand Opening was held on Friday, September 30th and it was met with a positive reception. Our students were excited about the items that were being sold, they were excited that they could use their BOLTS to buy items of high interest to them. Some of those items include snacks, keychains, tumbler cups with a Franklin logo, stickers for computers and phones, and much more. We will continue to ask students what items they feel should be in our store.
We have an amazing team of staff members on our PBIS team that have made this BOLT Store possible. They have donated items to the store that students find of value. Our staff works hard to make sure that we are recognizing when students have pride in our school and are following the Franklin Way.
PBIS for Staff- Staff Drawing Winners
Franklin also recognizes our staff for promoting the Franklin Way. Here are our most recent winners.
Way to go Mr. Maras!
Way to go Ms. Garza!
Way to go Ms. York!
If you are interested in donating to our PBIS BOLT Store, please reach out to the Franklin Middle School office for more information.
Franklin has an updated logo, we hope to have on gear real soon!!

Attendance
Attendance at School is important. If your student is struggling in this area and you would like some assistance, we'd love to help. During Franklin's Conference week we will be available to meet with you and your child to see if we can identify barriers that keep your student from coming to school. If you would like such a meeting please call Cherie Carroll at 573-2101.
Migrant Education Program
The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. The goal also includes collaboration with migratory parents and the collective community to provide a full range of services to address unique educational needs. The Washington State Migrant Education Program (MEP) is federally funded to ensure high-quality education programs and supplemental support services for migratory children. Migratory families often have trouble receiving continuous, high-quality educational services because of their high rate of mobility, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, health-related problems, disruption of their children’s education, and the lack of resources in the areas in which they live and work.
The Migrant Education Program is authorized under Part C of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended. Federal funds are allocated to OSPI based on per pupil expenditure for education and counts of eligible migratory children, ages 3 to 21, residing within the state. OSPI authorizes the sub-grants to local education agencies (school districts), institutions of higher education and other public and non-profit agencies.
Services offered to migrant children and their families may include:- Supplemental academic programs to assist in the achievement of state academic standards
- Instructional training
- Health programs
- Preschool programs (readiness, transitioning to elementary education)
- Family home visiting and academic counseling services
- Parental involvement
- Migrant student data and collection
- Student leadership opportunities
- Summer school programs
- Secondary credit accrual and exchange
- Grants for supplemental secondary services, dropout prevention and retrieval and alternative education programs

Winter 1 Sports Summary
Winter 1 sports are underway and we have had some great competitions so far. We've hosted home games for both wrestling and girls basketball. Our student-athletes have been working hard both in the classroom and in competition. We encourage all families to come out and support Franklin Athletics!
Wrestling
The Franklin wrestling team is back in action, trained, and competing. Our team consists of 23 athletes. Quite a few have extensive experience. Several are brand new to the sport. This combination gives us a great team, and growth for the coming seasons.. The best news is, after a COVID delay last year, we are able to host other teams from the District, as well as travel to competitions. Please consult the schedule or call the school to see the next event on our Sports Calendar.
