Pleasant Valley Staff Newsletter
Week of September 28, 2020
Our mission is to empower and inspire a community of lifelong learners and leaders.
Hello Superstars,
As we, and our learners, are getting the hang of NON-CRISIS Distance Learning, we have to switch to Hybrid next week. This is due to receiving a trend of an "Orange" rating from the Ohio Public Health Advisory System meeting the guidance issued from the Cuyahoga Board of Health earlier this month. I will communicate with parents today about the K Orientation days and reinforce the Hybrid Learning Schedule. Teachers, I know you have done the same. Still, please add this in your Monday communication what next week will look like because with K Orientation on Tuesday and Thursday, next week's first week of Hybrid Learning will look much different than a typical Hybrid Learning week.
For students who have not been logging on and whose parents are not responding to emails, please call that parent. They may not have a device or be checking emails, and we need to reach out in another way if one method does not have results.
While we are in Hybrid Learning or 100% in-person learning, All staff will need to park in the front or use the set of parking spaces at the back of the school closest to Arlington. DO NOT park in the back parking lot by the building- we will need this space for social distancing during recess.
During Hybrid Learning, we follow the Master Schedule for the Cohort that is in-person. For the Cohort that is not in person, see the expectations in PCSD Elementary Hybrid Document.
- All Staff, excluding PVLA, need to report to the building Tuesday - Friday.
- Teachers, please continue to sign in on Monday's if you choose to work from the building.
- Teachers need to assign offline workEncore will continue to post work for students for 30 minutes via Google Classroom *Clarifying Q & A:
*Q: So, on Thursday and Friday, how will the Green Cohort know which Encore class to access for online assignments?
*A: Every Encore teacher (or co-teaching team) will post a weekly grade level a 30-minute assignment for the Green Cohort to access on Thursday, Friday, and Monday (or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday for White Cohort). It may make more sense to continue with the RWB rotation to keep it consistent.
We will hold off on attendance and will not make students tardy until 9:30 am. We will try to see if this time will work by monitoring the arrival entrances very closely, especially for the first two weeks of Hybrid Learning.
Thank you to everyone for surveying your students today and putting in Help Desk Tickets so that we may have a district-issued device for all students when they arrive in person next week.
I added many attachments to the Newsletter email, including September's Staff Meeting Slides- as they go over some of the procedures used in Hybrid Learning. Please review all of them if they pertain to you.
You are a fantastic staff! Please know that we are all trying our best to be understanding and flexible. We have to be patient and give grace! We are in this TOGETHER!
Thank you again,
Stephanie

Final Call for the Secret Co- Worker
The basic idea to the “Secret Co-Worker” is participants are assigned a random Co-Worker and then bless them with surprises/gifts/pick-me-up notes, etc. throughout the year. There are no stipulations or rules. But a general rule of thumb is to do something nice at least once a month, on their birthday and on something around December before our Holiday Break. It can be something as simple as a note to brighten their day, a pack of gum, candy bar, little snack, a gift of any size, decorating their desk/office, etc.
Secret Co- Worker is open to ALL staff.
Based on the recommendations from the participants from last year-
We will follow this schedule:
- September - Randomly Assign Secret Co- Workers to Staff you complete survey
- October - December- Surprise your Secret Co Worker with simple small gifts
- January - Outing to reveal Secret Co -Worker
- January - Select New - Secret Co -Worker
- February - May - Surprise your Secret Co Worker with simple small gifts
- June - Outing to reveal Secret Co -Worker
Mindful Minute
How do you calm down when you’re feeling stressed? It’s an important question to ask yourself. One recommendation from doctors and scientists is to focus on your breath. Today, we share popular yet researched-supported breathing techniques to help you calm down quickly. Your breathing is a valuable tool to slow down your heart rate, lessen anxiety, regulate your moods, and calm you down. To enjoy the health benefits of mindful breathing, take a moment to learn the basics.
- Stand, sit, or lay down comfortably, inhale for 3 to 6 seconds through your nose and exhale 3 to 6 seconds out through your mouth. This is a cleansing breath to prepare and steady you. Think of it like stretching before your workout.
- Place your awareness on your breath, inhaling and exhaling normally through your nose. There’s no need to breathe differently than normal while at rest.
- When thoughts arise, simply label them, “thinking” or “wandering” to yourself, and return your awareness to your breath. It’s natural for thoughts to arise, but the exercise here is to return to the mindful breathing.
- You can practice mindful breathing for as little as 30 seconds to 20 minutes.
