Language Arts and Writing
In language arts we will continue to build on previous comprehension strategies. Students will be identifying keys and details to support the main idea of a text. Both non-fiction and fiction texts will be more complex and require students to dig deeper for meaning. Students will continue to ask and answer questions before, during, and after reading to increase their comprehension of the text. We will enjoy reading poems and look for poetic elements as we uncover the meaning.
Word study work will focus on additional spelling patterns that have the long vowel "a", as in the words break, hey, eight, and straight. Students will continue to build on their understanding of open and closed syllables and apply their knowledge to decoding and spelling multi-syllabic words. We will end the month with focusing on multiple meaning words and strategies to determine the different meanings of words that are spelled the same.
Math
Students will revisit and solidify previously learned skills such as 3 digit addition and subtraction up to 1,000 along with strategies to solve one and two step story problems. These skills are assessed to mastery in this quarter.
The focus this month will center mostly on Geometry and Fractions. Students will be identifying and comparing the attributes of 2D and 3D shapes. Vocabulary will focus on angles, sides, vertices and edges. When studying fractions, students will recognize that a fraction is a part of a whole. Students will be expected to identify 1/2 , 1/3, and 1/4 of a shape.
Please continue to reinforce the practice of both addition and subtraction facts up to 20. XtraMath is proving to be an effective strategy for increasing fact automaticity. Consistent practice = stronger fact fluency. Please encourage your child(ren) to regularly practice each week. If you are unable to do XtraMath, please practice using flashcards.
