Broken Arrow Week 10 Recap
Directors Notes
"The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours: as for the world and the fullness thereof you have founded them. Psalm 89:11 KJV
This week I was reading from Teaching From Rest by Sarah Mackenzie. If you haven't read it stop what you are doing and order it off Amazon or from her website Read Aloud Revival. I was reading specifically in Part 3 about being who you are. She quotes Thomas a, Kempis from the Imitation of Christ. "First keep the peace within yourself; then you can also bring peace to others."
This really caused me to stop and reflect. If we are anxious how can we teach from rest? How can we enjoy the very gifts that God has given us, our children? How can we enjoy the mundane days? How can we relish the good days if our underlying modus operandi is anxiety? We can't, believe me I lived to long being anxious and I missed out on so so much. It takes focus effort to be in a state of rest. It takes renewing our mind with the word of God and listening to what he says about us. It takes saying no to a lot of good things so you can experience the best things. When do you take time to breathe? When do you take time to reflect on who you are as a child of God? When do you take time to ask God the hard questions and listen for his answers? If we live in anxiety and always worrying about the future it is hard to hear what God is saying. I encourage all of us to stop and find rest in his presence. It takes time but eventually it becomes a habit and something we look forward too. The Father loves you and his word says that his perfect love casts out all fear and all anxiety.

Week 10 and Beyond
Foundations to Challenge
If your student knows nothing about geography, he will not be inspired or curious to rectify his ignorance when he reads about an unfamiliar place, precisely because he is unfamiliar with all places." Leigh Bortins, The Question (pg 112).
Has your family done much travel throughout the US? Memorizing the US states and capitals may give your child a longing to know more. You could find a pen pal from another state, by connecting with another CC Community. Cycle 3's geography memory work continues with memorizing our states and capitals; older students may even work on drawing the US from memory. This study prepares our students for the rigor of Challenge A's cartography focus. Knowledge of geography gives our students the context to make both history and literature come alive, as students are able to "see" where stories are set and where pivotal events of history take place. Next time your family visits a national monument or park, you and your student will have more to share.
