Homework in Kindergarten?
The only homework we ask of you and your child is that you read with your child every night, and that - once we begin Guided Reading - your child reads to you every night.
Guided Reading groups will begin soon (within the next 2 weeks), and your child's teacher will begin to send home small books in the blue pocket of the Purple Take Home Folder. Once those books begin coming home, please have your child read the books to you and log the titles on the Reading Log in the purple folder.
Click here to access our RES-U Presentation about Reading With Your Kindergartner. It is full of great information and helpful tips!

Kindergarten Announcements
Apples Needed - We will be doing some fun activities with our senses this week. Please send an apple of any color or variety (be UNIQUE!) to your child's teacher by Tuesday. Thank you!!
Parent Conferences - Your teacher will be emailing you a request to sign up for a parent conference soon. Watch for a "Sign Up Genius" invitation in your email in-box.
See Saw - Student Digital Portfolios - Every child at Roanoke Elementary has a digital portfolio this year. Teachers and students will be uploading student work samples throughout the year. In the next week to 10 days, watch your email or your child's Take Home Folder for information about how to access your child's portfolio. There is an opportunity for you to "Like" and give your child feedback on his or her work. We are looking forward to providing you with this peek into your child's school day!
Please consider sending in a light jacket or sweatshirt that your child can keep at school or in his or her backpack. The classrooms sometimes get chilly. Don't forget to write your child's name on the tag or inside the collar!

Readers Workshop
This week we worked on identifying rhyming words when our teacher read us a book. We also practiced isolating a word using our fingers - a word has a space before it and a space after it. We also used what we already knew about a topic (being worried) and used that "background knowledge" to help us understand the book, Wemberly Worried.
Reading Assessment Notes:
Teachers have finished up the first round of Beginning of Year Assessments with Kindergartners. We have assessed your child's ability to identify words that rhyme, identify words that begin with the same sound, their knowledge of upper and lowercase letters. We also determined a reading level for each child. Your child's teacher will be sharing this information with you at your upcoming parent conferences.

Writers Workshop
Students worked on planning and organizing our "writing" as they took their oral stories and turned them into illustrations. We practiced drawing a beginning, middle, and end for a story. We also learned the procedures of sharing our writing in the "Author's Chair."
Social Studies
This week we learned more about the American Flag. It is a symbol of the United States. It is red, white, and blue and has stars and stripes.
Math
This week we continued working on recognizing and matching quantities to 5, the numerals 1 - 5, and we continued to practice reading the number words one, two, three, four, and five.
We also worked on sorting pictures and items by their attributes. We practiced defining a rule for our sort. "These things are red, and these are not red." Check out the short videos below for some examples of our thinking.

Science
We learned about our 5 Senses. We specifically worked on our senses of hearing and touch.
Ask you child what parts of their body they use to hear and touch.
Ask them to describe things they can hear.
Put a mystery item in a paper bag. Have your child use his or her sense of touch to try to identify it.
