Safety Drill Update
Well, Mother Nature was not on our side... for either the first time we scheduled our safety drill, or the 'weather date.' We will hold our second safety drill of the year this month. The original letter that was sent out in April appears below.
In order to comply with Act 143, we must hold two drills each academic school year. This specific drill will focus on the evacuation of the buildings. Our students will work with staff members to strategically exit the building and make their way toward one of our rally points on foot; and will be given instructions on how to proceed in an actual emergency. After this, the students will return to their respective buildings. At all times, they will remain under the supervision of an adult.
We have taken a proactive approach to school safety in the Holy Hill Area School District and have provided significant amounts of training to our team members. Just like we conduct fire and tornado drills, we conduct two Standard Response Protocol drills per school year.
I am writing to enlist both your support, as well as your assistance. Our staff members will be speaking with the students prior to the drill, in order to introduce and/or remind them of the process and intended outcomes. These conversations will be age appropriate and vary depending on student grade. You can assist us in having a successful drill by providing further discussion at home. The video our middle school students have watched can be found at: https://iloveuguys.org/The-Standard-Response-Protocol.html and scrolling down to the bottom of the page.
Our key messages are:
We practice [all] drills so that everyone is prepared and knows just what to do in case of an emergency-- be it fire, tornado or a crisis situation (though this term is not used with our younger students).
The second reason we practice drills is so that we can continue to review our systems to ensure that we are both up-to-date in recommended practices and procedures, and so that if there are any areas of recommended improvement we can make alterations for the future. Practicing these drills also gives us the opportunity to work with the Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, and our insurance company, M3. Representatives of each of these groups play key roles during the drills themselves, and provide valuable insights and feedback.
Finally, we practice drills at various times during the year and day so that we can prepare for a variety of situations. Input from our safety team, Parent Sounding Board, and law enforcement helps to drive the direction and speed with which we proceed with our drills. The drill scheduled next week will occur while students are in class. While the drill is in progress, visitors in the building will be required to participate in the drill; those attempting to enter the building will not be allowed access until the drill is complete.
After the drills are complete, I will send an additional email to update you on our findings. Thank you for your understanding as we work to create and maintain a safe environment for your children. I know that while important, this can be an uncomfortable thing to think about. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
