Principal's Message
Spirit Week!
In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, schools spanning the country celebrate Read Across America next week. Chapman is showing our love for reading with Spirit Week! Each day is inspired by a different Dr. Seuss book.
Our book for Monday is The Sleep Book -- wear pajamas or comfy clothes and get ready to read! The rest of the days are as follows:
Tuesday: Green Eggs and Ham -- wear the color green
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday -- wear your clothes inside out, mismatched, or upside down
Thursday: The Cat in the Hat -- wear your favorite hat
Friday: Fox in Sox -- wear silly or mismatched socks
If you have any extras of any of the above and can contribute them to our office, please bring them in and we can help provide them for kids who may not have these items.
Principal's Coffee
Please join me Friday 3/3 after Round Up for coffee in our Community Room (Rm 6). We will be discussing the upcoming state tests and school budgeting.

Glitter Jars
In our Chapman mindfulness program we are teaching our students three aspects of mindful awareness. First, we develop mindful awareness (concentration, clarity and equanimity) using aspects of our experience that are neutral, fundamental and continuously available. These include:
- The Auditory Field (Example: Listening to the bell and then progressing to ambient sound in the environment.)
- Neutral Body Sensations (Example: The feeling of the feet touching the ground)
- Neutral Breath Sensations (Example: The rise and fall of the abdomen).
Second, we take the attention developed through training with neutral sensations and apply it to positive mind states to enhance overall well-being. This includes using mindful awareness to enhance, deepen and prolong feelings of...
- Kindness
- Compassion
- Gratitude
- Generosity
Third, we use these new inner resources (the ability to stabilize mindfulness of 1) neutral experiences and 2) positive mind states) to meet inner and outer experiences that are challenging and difficult to be with or experience.
One way to be with a difficult or challenging experience or mind state is to focus attention on something visual. Using an object that changes over time can help settle a difficult emotion or experience. A glitter jar is a great tool to help kids and adults calm down and it’s a fun family project. We are making glitter jars for all Chapman classrooms for students to use during the school day. Check out this beautiful short film about children and mindfulness that features glitter jars:
Ms. Ariel’s Glitter Jar
Materials
Glass jar or bottle (mason jars work well or any cool jar you have on hand)
Fine glitter or glitter glue (not extra fine- it’s too light)
Regular size glitter (not necessary but it’s cool to have different weighted glitter)
Karo Corn Syrup
Hot water
Food Coloring
Glue
Instructions
Fill the glass jar halfway with Karo Syrup. Then add glitter to the jar. Fill the jar with hot water most of the way to the top. Shake jar for at least 3 minutes until the Karo Syrup has melted and the glitter is mixed well. Add more glitter if desired. Add food coloring if desired. When the jar has the amount of glitter and color that you are happy with, add hot water to the top of the jar. Glue on the lid and enjoy.
Best,

PPS Student Health Screenings
Health screenings are taking place at Chapman Main on 3/2/17 and Chapman @ Ramona on 3/15/17.
Kindergarten and first grade students will receive vision and hearing screenings, grades 3 and 5 will receive vision only. If your child wears glasses, please help them remember to bring their glasses to school that day so that they may be used during the screening for distant vision.
Results from these screenings are sent to parents within about 30 days following the screening. Abnormal results are mailed to families from the district office; normal results are hand carried home by students. If families need assistance interpreting the results or in accessing health insurance, please contact the school nurse.
If you desire that your child be excluded from the health screening, please notify the school office immediately in writing.
