Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

We have been working hard this week SOARing! Please make sure to read over all of the Eagle Edition for important news and updates.

We have a new opportunity in CSD this year for students to share their voices. Please see below:

Applications for the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council are now open. One student from our school will be selected to join other elementary students from City Schools of Decatur to share their perspectives and experiences with the superintendent on a variety of issues. Students interested in applying to serve on this council should access the application via the purple icon on Launchpad. For the application, students will be asked to create a response that explains why they want to be on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council and have the option of submitting a written response, picture, presentation, or other artifact. Families may support students with submitting their applications, but the ideas and work submitted should be those of the student. Additional details are available on the application. The deadline to submit the application is Monday, September 12, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

Glennwood will bid farewell to the hive of honeybees living in a few of our school spaces. A professional beekeeper is going to remove the bees over Fall Break and they will be relocated. I hope they'll BEE happy!

Warmest regards,

Holly Brookins, Ph.D.

Principal

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend, and that you're looking forward to our upcoming Fall Break. Last week, we had our Curriculum Night where parents got to listen to classroom grade-level presentations from teachers. I wanted to create a school counseling program presentation to share with parents as well. Please see the presentation here, which explains a little about who I am, what I do as a school counselor, and how you and students can reach out to me. Let me know if you have any questions. I appreciate your support and all that you do for your students and the school. Mr. B.

Important Information about Gifted Review

Each fall semester the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and give it to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before October 4th. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood is Susanna Shewan. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit the following website.

Sidekick Program at Glennwood for 2023-24 School Year

Is your child part of the AANHPI and/or APIDA community? Consider becoming part of the Sidekick program at Glennwood ES.

To foster a sense of support and connection within the CSD AANHPI/APIDA community, Decatur HS student mentors will be grouped into pairs and matched up with Glennwood elementary students.

There will be ~7 in-person sessions occurring monthly on Fridays between 11:30 and 12:30 starting this fall (Sept or Oct) and going through April. Meetings will be held at the Glenwood ES campus.

Each session typically includes get to know you games, team work activities, art work, and high five friendship cheers.

This program is free and open to all identifying AANHPI/APIDA students at Glenwood ES.

The program is an initiative supported by CSD's Department of Equity and Student Services and Decatur HS's Asian Student Union. This will be our 3rd year of Sidekicks since beginning in the '21 - '22 school year.

The program is coordinated by Ms Beth Lewis, a 15 year teacher veteran of CSD and Decatur HS, and mom of 3 CSD children including a current Glenwood kindergartner. Ms Lewis is of Japanese descent (mother is from Tokyo) and also sponsors Decatur HS's Asian Student Union.

Please complete the Google form HERE by Sept 15th. Questions - please reach out to Ms Lewis at elewis@csdecatur.net.

As COVID-19 remains a global concern, the City Schools of Decatur (CSD) wants to remind all students, staff, and families to please take precautions and remember to follow these critical measures to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus:

· Stay home when sick

· Cover coughs and sneezes with elbow/tissue and immediately throw it away

· Do not cover your mouth with bare hands

· Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

· Clean touched surfaces and objects frequently

CSD no longer has the funding, authority, or monitoring systems to track and trace cases beyond self-reporting. Therefore, we will not send exposure notifications as we risk violating HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality guidelines.
