Falco Newsletter Dec. 13th - 17th
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It was a great week last week! We are happy that Friday was uneventful! I want to say thank you to everyone who helped out with speaking to your students about social media and the importance of being discerning about information they share and who they follow on social media. The threat of a “riot” turned into threats of a more severe nature as misinformation was spread like an old school game of telephone. I also appreciate your patience as we sort through the reported information and get to the bottom of everything. Five Oaks is safe and our staff are vigilant.
As we head into Winter Break, I am so excited for the spirit week our students have planned! Our 8th grade leadership students have worked hard to create an inclusive, fun week for their peers! Make sure to check parentsquare for fun pictures of our dress up days.
Our character trait for the month is gratitude. I am truly thankful for this community of educators, learners, and all the people that help our students be successful. We are so lucky to get to do what we do every day! I hope all of you have a restful break and a time of celebration, in whatever way your family celebrates, with those that are special to you. After our fun spirit week we will see you all in the New Year!

Winter Reading at Cedar Mill & Bethany Libraries
Join us for an all-ages Winter Reading challenge December 13-January 16 and help us Read for a Better World. Every hour you read donates 10¢ to the Oregon Food Bank, up to $1,000. Read a little and help us give A LOT!
Participate one of THREE ways:
Download the Beanstack app and track your reading on your phone or tablet.
Track your reading on a paper log from the library. Play BINGO and connect the dots as you read! Return forms to either library by January 16.
Log online using Beanstack at Library.CedarMill.org/read-now
Our winter book fair went so well! Thank you for supporting your student’s reading and supporting fundraising efforts to buy more books for our school library. If you want even more books, shop the website at www.scholastic.com/bf/foms until December 19th.
Did you miss this year’s selection? Be on the lookout for our next Scholastic Book Fair in March!
30-Day Notice and Opt-Out Information for the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS)
In 2010, Oregon adopted enhanced K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The state tests challenge students to think critically, going beyond multiple choice and asking them to explain their answers. These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress and help us identify schools that need additional supports to ensure more students meet the higher standards.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment test, please complete the opt-out form at the bottom of this page. Please submit this form to your student’s school by January 3 (for students in Grades 9-12) or February 4 (for students in Grades 3-8). This form is only valid for the 2021-22 school year.
What is AVID? (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
Collaboration: Collaborative learning involves intentionally designed student groups engaged in “co-laboring” toward meaningful learning outcomes, using active engagement activities planned to maximize learning, and facilitating the sharing of the workload (Barkley, Cross, & Major, 2005). AVID’s high-engagement learning strategies involve collaborative activities through which individual students help each other learn and thereby strengthen their own learning. In these activities, students are responsible for their own learning; educators serve as facilitators in a learning community working together for the success of the group.
At Five Oaks teachers and students use the following collaboration strategies:
