Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 28 - 11 September 2019
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
2019 Performing Arts Festival Shield and Scholarship
A huge congratulations to all students who have participated in the 30th Anniversary Catholic Performing Arts Festival this year. All students have represented our school in an amazing fashion and are a real credit to their families, teachers and school community. Well done.
It is a real pleasure to advise that the Whitford Catholic Primary School Year 6 Lyrical Dance Group is the recipient of the Catholic Education Commission Award for Christian Dance (Primary). This is a fabulous achievement for all - congratulations. A representative from the Dance Group will be presented with the Perpetual Shield at the Perth Concert Hall this Monday 16 September 2019 commencing at 7.00pm. We look forward to showcasing the shield over the next twelve months.
Parent Community Survey
I take this opportunity of thanking parents who completed the Parent Community Survey which closed last Friday. We received 65 submissions which is a great start in planning for 2020 and beyond. Just a reminder that we will be running a parent focus group on Monday 16 September at 9.00am here at school. If you would like to contribute to an informal small group conversation, please contact the school office.
Junior Athletics Carnival
Our Junior Athletics Carnival was a huge success last Friday. The weather was perfect and the children from Pre-Primary to Year Two competed with great enthusiasm and determination. A variety of events were held from sprints to tug-o-war, and every child had the opportunity to earn points for their respective faction.
A massive thank you to Mr D’Adamo for all of his hard work in preparing the children for the day and the organisation needed to make the carnival such a wonderful and enjoyable event. Thanks also the Junior Primary staff who helped out, from setting up the tents to marshalling the students. We had a lot of parent volunteers as well who gave up their day, and it was great to see so many spectators enjoying the events. Without the support of the members in our community, days like this would not be possible, so again, thanks to everyone for your efforts. Now, bring on the senior carnival this week!
Science Fair
Our inaugural WCPS ‘Science Fair’ was held in the gym and what a morning it was. A dozen or so stations were set up for children to explore, learn and interact with. The stations highlighted some of the learning that each year group have previously completed throughout the year. We also had some special guests from Sacred Heart College who shared information about their NASA experiences , Lego Young Engineers, a Bunnings stall and some wonderful parents who were willing to share their expertise with the children. The Year Six children did a great job helping out and showcasing the amazing learning that has been happening across the school.
Thank you to Mrs Godrich and Mrs Hannaford for organising this initiative and the hours spent planning the day were certainly appreciated by all. The children were highly engaged and they all left the gym with happy faces and renewed energy. Can’t wait to see what is in plan for next year!
WCPS Capital Development Project: Signage, Oval Fencing and Canopy
Please be advised that we have recently submitted a Design Application for Approval to the City of Joondalup for our new school signage, oval fencing and front canopy. Plans will be available for viewing on the staffroom window, facing the courtyard. I thank the School Board for their ongoing input and focus on ensuring our school facilities are in keeping with our requirements.
Term Four Afterschool Art Classes
Please check out the advertisements further in this newsletter if your child is interested in art as we have two talented parents willing to run some visual art classes next term.

Keeping Safe Protective Behaviours Workshop - Thursday 12th September - Last Day To Register
The Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia is committed to child protection strategies and procedures to ensure the care, safety and protection of all children in Catholic schools. A key principle of the policy is that all children have the right to a thorough and systematic education in all aspects of personal safety. This should be done in partnership with their parents/caregivers.
Parents, Guardians and Caregivers are invited to attend a Keeping Safe Protective Behaviours Workshop 6-8pm, Thursday 12th September in the Library.
This interactive and informative workshop will provide parents and caregivers with an overview of the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum that is implemented at Whitford Catholic Primary School as well as information on how you can reinforce these personal safety messages at home.
Presenter: Justine O'Malley (BA Ed, Masters SW) Child Safe Consultant, CEWA
If you wish to attend this important and informative Workshop please confirm your attendance via the form on School Stream. There is no cost for the Workshop but confirming your attendance allows us to plan for numbers.
Where are they now?
It’s always great to hear news about our ex-students and what they might be up to today. Jamie Ferguson (brother of Ben in Year 6) has been accepted to study a Bachelor of Film (media production and analysis) at the SAE creative media industries Institute in Perth. We look forward to seeing you now role out on those film acknowledgments in the future Jamie.
If you have some good news about current or past WCPS students that you would like to share, please let the office know.

School Photos 2019 Information
On Tuesday 17 September and Wednesday 18 September, school photos will be taken in the school hall.
There are a number of issues that require your attention for these two days:
- Children must wear their full school winter uniform on both days which includes their school jumpers (not sports jumpers or rain jackets). If your child normally wears their sports uniform on Tuesday or Wednesday, they must be in school uniform for these two days.
- Personalised flyers will be distributed to every child shortly. The only method of ordering photos is online through Kapture’s website.
- You have the option to order a sibling photo package online, however please note sibling orders will close at midday on Monday 16th September. We suggest you place your sibling order as soon as you receive your flyer with your instructions.
- Sibling photos will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday morning between 8am – 9am. Please note that this year, families with surnames A - H will be on Tuesday and families with surnames I – Z will be on Wednesday. However, families with Pre Kindy and Kindy students will be according to their days of attendance.
- You can place an order online for class or individual photographs at anytime for the remainder of the current school year. However, a $15 fee will apply if you order more than 10 days after photography.
- Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on 9240 1714 or email enquiries@kapture.com.au
Please note the arrangements for Pre Kindy classes. Photos will only be taken on Tuesday. If your child is in Pre Kindy on Thursday they should attend on Tuesday from 9.00am – 9.50am for an individual and group photo. Photos are not compulsory, however, it would be a lovely memento of their first year at school.
The following is the timetable for photographs. Please note that we cannot alter times for classes for children who may have other appointments, etc.

Paint Me A Rainbow Campaign 2019
This year, the Paint Me A Rainbow Campaign raised $1174 to purchase resources for students at WCPS with sensory needs. The school has purchased resources which will be available to specific students depending on their individual needs. At the beginning of Term 4, we will be offering 2 morning sessions before school where the children will be involved in structured sensory motor activities. The aim of these sessions is to support those children who need some sensory movement activities prior to starting the school day. Individual teachers will be consulted about those students they feel will benefit from the program and parents will be be notified for consent. More information to follow!
Please click on the link below to view an article that was placed in CEWA news on 6th September that provides the community with information about the Paint Me A Rainbow Campaign and the promotion of autism awareness in WA schools.

Cool Kids Child Anxiety Program – For eligible Year 4 students
Anxiety is also known as worry, fear, nervousness, shyness………. it can have lots of names!
Anxious and fearful behaviour is common in children. Most children learn how to manage a range of fears and worries.
Everyone gets anxiety, but some people become anxious more easily, more often and more intensely.
Mrs Elaine Mahon - Social Worker, will be running a School Based Cool Kids Anxiety Program small group for eligible Year 4 students commencing this term.
The Cool Kids Child Anxiety Program is a structured, skills-based program that teaches children and their parent(s) how to better manage a child’s anxiety. It is designed for children aged 6 –12 years of age. The aim of the program is for children and parents to gain knowledge, confidence and skills in understanding and managing anxiety.
If you believe:
* Your child feels more anxious than other children their age and ability
* Anxiety stops your child from participating in activities at school or socially
* Anxiety interferes with your child’s ability to do things other children of similar age do easily
* Your child’s anxiety and fears seem out of proportion to what is happening in their life
And would like more information on the Cool Kids Program, please CLICK HERE to view the Cool Kids brochure.
If you would like to discuss the Program and the referral process involved, please contact Mrs Elaine Mahon via email to arrange an appointment.
