Think Different. Do Different. Be Different.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 16 - SEPTEMBER 20, 2019
QUARTERLY CONCEPT: CHANGE
Ms. Kim's Class and Their Reading Buddies
Creating a love of literacy
Oh, what fun!
Greetings Gardeners!
Everyone on our campus shows they love and care about scholars each day. This has been demonstrated by teachers working extra hours to ensure they are providing exemplar instruction. Staff steps in to help one another and takes extra duties to ensure others can be successful. Our staff smiles and greets one another as well as scholars and families to ensure we are in a good place and we feel valued. We can make this year successful as long as we remember to care for ourselves and for one another. We are truly a family and this is what makes Shamrock Gardens a beautiful place to work and learn each day! Thank you for your unending devotion and hard work. You are an exemplar staff!

EXCITING NEWS!!!!
PLC Central is now open for planning!!!!!
Staff, we are thrilled to provide a mutual space for teams to plan each week. In an effort, to create a space that is free from interruptions and a release from the classroom, it is an expectation that all grade levels plan in Room 17 effective Monday, September 23. We will utilize Room 17 for 1/2 Day plannings starting this week.
Planning in a mutual space provides the following:
- Fair space for everyone - mutual territory
- Consistency with locations
- Physical and mental break from the classroom
In order to accommodate needs with materials, each hallway will be assigned a cart to load any materials needed for planning so you can easily transfer them to Room 17 for planning purposes.
Please reach out to ILT with any suggestions of items we can provide in PLC Central to create an atmosphere that will help to create a calm and nurturing environment.
NC Digital Learning Competencies: All instructional and administrative staff renewing their license in 2019 or later will be required to earn at least 2.0 CEUs in the Digital Learning Competencies per renewal cycle. Information on how to earn DLC credit is included here.

TEACHERS - DON'T MISS THIS!!!
Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to view a virtual screening of the award winning ACEs documentary PAPER TIGERS, accessible all day nationally and internationally starting at 5:00 a.m. EST via private VIMEO viewing link on September 17th, 2019.
PAPER TIGERS chronicles a year in the life of Lincoln High School in the community of Walla Walla, Washington. The kids who come to Lincoln have a history of truancy, behavioral problems and substance abuse. After Lincoln's principal is exposed to research about the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), he decides to radically change the school's approach to discipline. With the aid of diary camera footage, the film follows six students. From getting into fights, grappling with traumatic events in their lives, and on the cusp of dropping out, they find healing, support and academic promise at Lincoln High.

SPA
On Monday, September 10 - Vision To Learn will be doing vision screens for all the children at Shamrock. Any child identified with vision concerns will be sent home with a letter for parent. VTL will return with their mobile clinic in October to do full ophthalmic exams on the kids who are referred.
Your role as teacher:
- Keep teaching! Anticipate there may be more activity/sounds in the halls than the norm.
- Be flexible! We will be screening 500 children in one day.
- Be patient! This small disruption will save several missed days of class the children would normally have if the care was obtained outside of school.
- Make sure the letter goes home! Thank you!
From the VLT website: (Vision To learn) eliminates cost and logistical barriers for parents, decreases stigma by providing glasses to multiple students at a time, and schools can encourage use (of the glasses). Vision To Learn was founded to make sure every child has the glasses he or she needs to succeed in school and in life.
- Thursdays I will be at Devonshire this year. Call the office for first responders in case of emergency.
- September 10: VTL Vision screens
- Sept 25: Exclusion Day
- October 2,3,8,10: VTL Mobile Eye Exams
- October 15, 16: Dental Screens (? Pre-K, K, 5)
- November 6: VTL Glasses distributed
- Dental Education – week of Feb 10
