Spartan Spotlight
December 2019/January 2020
Hello Spartan Families,
We have completed 1/3 of the school year and it continues to fly by. The second quarter is in full swing and we are quickly approaching the end of semester one. We have only four weeks remaining before our final exams. Continue to encourage your student(s) to complete all necessary homework, quizzes, tests and other required assignments ASAP.
Winter break is December 23 - January 1. Classes resume on Thursday, January 2, 2020. When we return from holiday break we will only have 4 days of school before we begin our final exams. Semester one final exams are scheduled January 8 - 9. Please encourage your son/daughter to review the material and be prepared for finals. Finals count for 20% of a final grade. See page four for details.

Students or parents/guardians can request a meeting with their school counselor. Course selection and registration for the 2020-2021 school year will begin in January. During the registration process, students will review their graduation requirements and course offerings and revise their 4-year graduation plan. Students are encouraged to discuss their choices with their families, teachers, case managers and counselors. Each student will have a review session with their counselor prior to registering for their courses. If you or your student would like to schedule additional time with a counselor to review his/her graduation plan and course choices, please call 446-2412.

How can I protect my child against flu?
- Get a seasonal flu vaccine for yourself and your child to protect against seasonal flu viruses. Take everyday steps to prevent the spread of all flu viruses.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Teach your child to take these actions too.
- Try to keep your child from having close contact (about 6 feet) with sick people, including anyone in the household who is sick.

Inclement Weather
If school is in session, and a parent decides that a student should remain at home due to weather conditions, that decision will be respected by the school. Parents should use their own judgment in determining if the weather is suitable for their children to make the journey to school. It is always up to parents to make the final decision about whether or not to send their student to school if they believe weather conditions present a safety issue. The absence for the day would be considered an excused absence.
If school is called off, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School cancellation information will also be broadcasted via local media, and will be posted across our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
If weather or a situation develops during the day, and it is determined that an early dismissal is in the best interest of the students, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School closure information will also be broadcasted via local media, and the information will be posted on our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
On mornings when weather conditions warrant additional time for students and staff to get to school, a two hour delay will be used. On these days, North High will begin school at 10:00 A.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and students will report to their period three class. On Wednesdays, we will start with period two at 10:00 a.m. Buses will run later than the normal arrival time. Energy saver bus riders can add two hours to the scheduled times printed and expect the bus to be at the specified stops two hours after the printed times. The early run of these energy saver routes will not run.
After School Reminder
We ask that parents make transportation arrangements for students who don’t ride the bus or have their own transportation to be picked up as close to 3:45 P.M. as possible. We lock all doors to the locker bays and academic wings at 4:00 p.m. every day. After 4:00 p.m. students will not be allowed to enter these areas.
Students are asked to wait in the foyer doors to be picked up and not be hanging around in the building after 4:00 p.m. unless they are involved in an after school activity.
