Message from Mrs. Hawkins
When the 2020 school year started, we did not know how long we would be able to have students attend school because of the Coronavirus. I am so grateful for the two months we have been in session and the low number of students and staff affected by COVID symptoms, exposure, and/or illness. The current precautions are working and I am hopeful we will be able to be in school if families, students, and staff continue to follow the guidelines from MN Department of Health. These documents will provide you with details COVID-pdf19 decision tree for student/staff, COVID-19 Attendance Tool .
Conferences will be held virtually this fall on the scheduled dates of November 17, 19, and 20. Watch for an email the first week in November that will contain the conference sign up link. Students will bring home their school devices so they can take part in the conference. This will be a great opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and focus on the student’s success and opportunities for growth.
I wish you all health and happiness for November 2020.

Five Fast Facts about Levy 2020
Owatonna Public Schools has two questions on the November 3 ballot: Q1 to renew the existing operating levy that is about to expire; Q2 to increase the operating levy in two phases - in 2022 and 2025.
Funds from the levy increase would be used to maintain:
quality programming and activities
appropriate class sizes
career-technical education programs
Because Q2 phases in the levy increase over time, the tax impact is phased in as well - with no tax increase until 2022.
The state will match every three local dollars with one state dollar through equalization aid - but only if voters renew the levy and reinvest in the district.
The School Board unanimously approved this as a shared approach: budget cuts on the district side with a request to voters to increase the operating levy on the community side.
If voters do not approve the levy increase, the district will face millions in additional budget cuts over the next three years, resulting in:
- class size increases through teacher and staff layoffs
- cuts to school and district support services
- cuts to academics, activities, athletic and music programs
