TERRIFIC KIDS EVERY WHERE
Colleton County School District has partnered with The Kiwanis Club to bring the Terrific Kids Program to our schools for our students in grades K-4 through 5th grade. You may have seen blue and yellow bumper stickers around town: MY CHILD IS A COLLETON COUNTY TERRIFIC KID. Just what does that mean?
A Terrific Kid is Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Influential, Friendly, Impeccable and Caring, according to program sponsor Kiwanis International.
A Terrific Kid is a student recognition program, created by the Kiwanis Club, that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students work with their classroom teacher and establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or schoolwork. All students participate and everyone has an opportunity to become recognized as a TERRIFIC KID. Our students are recognized and awarded monthly. The character word for October was "RESPONSIBILITY".
Every month, each school will honor one child from every homeroom from every grade. A ceremony is held each month with members of the school administration, teachers, and community leaders on hand to present the students with a certificate, bumper sticker, medal, and coupons donated from local businesses.
This year’s business sponsors are: an Entry to Bee City, a slice of Pizza at Castillo’s Pizzeria, a free Waffle at Waffle House, and a Snow Cone from Pelican Ice. In addition, some material sponsors are Mary Anne Blake Attorney at Law, Bee City Zoo and The Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce. We welcome more sponsors as the program grows.

THE BAND OF BLUE
The Colleton County High School Band of Blue gave an outstanding performance and earned a top 10 ranking at the 2022 4A SCBDA State Marching Band Championships held this past Saturday at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC.
The Band of Blue placed 9TH overall with a score of 81.7. There were 16 finalist bands out of 48 4A Programs in the state that qualified for the annual South Carolina Band Directors Association State Marching Band Championships. The Band of Blue performed their show “Saints and Sinners” to a near capacity audience in Columbia.
The Band of Blue has been top 12 finalist in the state every year in 4A and 5A since 1976.
Director Tom Finigan stated: “We are extremely proud of our Band of Blue! This band gave a great performance today and earned a 9th place ranking.” This year’s show was a FUN show and the band really enjoyed performing the Mardi Gras/Southern Gospel theme. The production and singing Lil Liza Jane ended up being one the most memorable and talked about moments at the state contest this year! Many bands joined in after awards and during the retreat sang along with the band back to the buses! It was good to see bands interact and have FUN again after all they have been thru in the past two years! Ending the year in the top 10 shows growth in our program. This year’s 4A division was very close and scores were within tenth of points. Colleton County was the only true low country school to make it in the top 16 in 4A. Our Seniors have had a great season and we are happy for them!

iREADY CELEBRATION
Students in kindergarten through grade nine have been working hard in the iReady online instructional tool. Students were placed on a personalized learning pathway after completing their diagnostic assessment in September. Students are expected to
work in iReady at least 45 minutes weekly in both reading and math. Student are expected to pass all lessons with 70% accuracy. Usage data was used to determine the percent of their students meeting this expectation along with the percent of lessons passed for the month of October. Three schools were recognized
today for their overall percentage of student’s time on task and lessons passed for both reading and math. Congratulations to Northside Elementary earning first place with 62.75%, Bells Elementary with 62.25% at second place, and Cottageville Elementary at third place with 57.5%.
