Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 5th May 2017
Read All About It
Thank you to everyone who supported the Scholastic Book Fair organised by the Friends of the School. An amazing £555.93 worth of books was purchased, and as we receive 100% commission to spend on books, our book collection is extremely well stocked again. These Year 2 children were really excited by the selection in the photograph so we hope to see 100% on the reading raffle graph very soon!
The next meeting of the Friends will be announced soon. Help will be needed for the Summer Fair, which is on Saturday 17th June. Put the date in your diaries please!
giving a smile
In school we are learning about global issues and this starts with our youngest children. When asked, 'What would you give to a refugee child if they came to the school?' there were many answers, our favourite however was 'a smile'. We continue to welcome everyone to our school with a smile and to teach the children about the world around them.
We hope in the future to be named officially as a 'School of Sanctuary'.
A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety.
A School of Sanctuary is a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. It is a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.
We think these descriptions match our school very well, do you too?
worship
OUR PLANET AND ITS PEOPLE: THINKING GLOBALLY.
This wider theme is broken into individual weekly topics based around global issues and how they link to our everyday lives and explores issues from different countries around the world. This links well with our strong record on promoting diversity and cultural understanding.
Year 2 continued our Weekly Worship on this theme with a lively assembly about food. They managed to have two songs, including listening to 'Food, glorious food' and say a prayer and a poem, all about thanking everyone who produces our food from farm to plate! Our Weekly Worship events are certainly worth attending, and we encourage all parents to come along at 9 o'clock when it's your child's turn.
Our programme of Welcome Worship assemblies for the rest of the term is outlined below, but please note that we have had to change the Year 3 date due to the Chapel being used for SATS next week:
Thursday 18th May - Year 4
Thursday 25th May - Year 5
Thursday 8th June - Year 6
Thursday 22nd June - Year 3
“Go everywhere in the world and tell the good news to everyone.”

Reading Raffle
Spending a little time reading with your child is always special, and helps improve confidence and learning. Also, as publicised in the Update recently, there really are loads of lovely winners' books to choose from, so please encourage your child to read regularly. One lucky child who has read five times or more during the week (or 5 if the class achieves 100%!) is selected by raffle from every class to choose a book from our special collection to take home and keep (and read!). Well done Year 6 with 91% of children in their class reading 5 times or more this week (as noted by an adult in their reading journal).
Welcome Miss Wood
