LEVELING UP IN 2020
Howdy Hounds!
We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! We are excited to welcome our Hounds back to campus Monday and hear about the fun they had over the break! This week the weather is supposed to be rather chilly. Just a reminder to be sure to label your child's jackets/outerwear as our lost and found tends to get rather large this time of year.
Thank you again to the families that have participated in our Charleston Wrap Fundraiser! We are looking forward to being able to purchase additional walkie-talkies, instructional resources for small group instruction, and PBIS Reward incentives! The fundraiser ends Monday, November 30th, so remember to get in any last minute orders!
Just a quick reminder that this year all birthday treats must be individually wrapped, prepackaged, and store bought. Ideas include Hostess/Little Debbie snacks, pre-packaged Rice Krispie Treats, and fruit snacks. Donuts or items from a store bakery are not permitted, as they are not individually wrapped and prepackaged. Thank you for helping us keep our Hounds safe.
Here's to a great week!
Sincerely,
Bethany Cunningham
Principal
With new students enrolling and families that have recently transitioned to on-campus instruction, please see the map below to review our car line procedures. Please be sure that you are utilizing Charger Way and not u-turning at the Irene Stern Community Center. Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and effective car rider line.
Please note that our doors open at 7:00am. To help the flow of our car rider line, please ensure that your child is ready to exit the car by having their mask on when you pull up. A reminder that our school day ends at 2:55pm this year. We are now dismissing at our standard time. We appreciate your patience as we continue to maximize the effectiveness of our car rider line. With the changes in protocols due to Covid-19, it is taking some additional time to load cars, as students are being dismissed from their individual classrooms.
Parents of a Huggins Kindergarten and Second Grade Students:
Your child will be taking the (COGAT) Cognitive Abilities Test Universal Screener in December. This test measures general thinking and problem-solving skills that students have learned through in-school and out-of-school experiences. The scores obtained from the COGAT Screener may be used in instructional planning by teachers to best meet the needs of students. The Cognitive Abilities Test also serves as one of several pieces of information used for additional identification of students for the Gifted and Talented (GT) Program in LCISD.
There are 3 Battery Sections to the screener that will take approximately 1 hour (or less) of testing.
The Verbal Battery tests a student’s vocabulary, as well as his/her comprehension of ideas, efficiency and verbal memory, and ability to discover word relationships.
The Quantitative Battery tests the student’s quantitative reasoning and problem-solving ability and provides an appraisal of the student’s general level of abstract reasoning.
The Nonverbal Battery presents the most novel problems to students. The items on these tests use only geometric shapes and figures that have had little direct relationship to formal school instruction. The tests require no reading
Please assist your child in performing to their best ability by making sure they:
- Receive an adequate amount of sleep
- Eat a nutritious breakfast.
- Are present and arrive at school on time
- Receive encouragement to do his/her very best.
Attendance Boundary Committee (Repeat)
This January, Lamar CISD will begin zoning for Morgan Elementary. If you’re interested in participating in this process as a member of the attendance boundary committee, please go to the Huggins website and click the Attendance Boundary Committee banner at the top of the page. If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to call the District office at (832) 223-0330.

Happy Holidays Huggins Family!
We are excited to announce the Huggins Angel Tree is almost ready! We are opening up the first opportunities to adopt families to our parents this year. Parents may call our front office at 832-223-1600 or email Ashley Allen (laura.allen@lcisd.org), starting on November 17th, to adopt a family for this holiday season.
This year we are asking our parents to purchase gifts that are age appropriate for the student based on information you receive from us. We are asking that gifts are at maximum $40 per student that you have adopted. We know you are a generous bunch, but this can cause a problem when spending is not equal among our kids. Please consider adopting more kids if you want to spend more than $40 dollars.
All presents are due to Huggins Elementary by Monday, December 7th, 2020. This will allow for time to deliver presents. Presents may be dropped off as soon as they are ready to go! Please write you assigned number on every wrapped present. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we ask that you drop off presents in the morning carline or between 7:30-10AM in the office. All deliveries are being coordinated by our counselors, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Reddy. If you have any questions you may contact them at 832-223-1605. Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday season!
Sincerely,
Amy Evans & Kate Reddy

Face Coverings (Repeat)
Students are required to bring two dress code approved masks/face coverings daily. One will be worn, and one additional mask/face covering will be brought in a sealed/ziploc bag. Labeling of the masks with a student name is suggested.
Mask questions we have received:
Can my child wear a face shield? Full-face shields may be used in place of a mask to protect eyes, nose, and mouth whenever a mask is not feasible or whenever the education context may benefit from the ability to see an individual’s full face.
Can my child wear a neck gaiter/buff? Yes, these are also approved.
Does the mask have to be a Huggins uniform color? No. Masks may be any color or design. However, no inappropriate language or images will be allowed.
***Please note that BSN Sports has graciously donated Huggins Hounds lanyards that will be given to students on the first day of school. Students will be able to use these lanyard to attach their masks so that they do not get lost.
Please click below for more information regarding face coverings.
