Carlisle SBIC
Our committee consists of staff members, District level personnel, parents, community members (residents of the District, but not parents of students), and business representatives.
Parent membership includes a PTA representative, one parent appointed by the principal, and four parents determined by a random drawing from among volunteers. Members serve for a one or two year term. Three are vacancies to fill for the 2016-2017 school year.
If you are willing to serve Carlisle as a member of the SBIC committee, please email our Assistant Principal, Jana Sandall, at jana.sandall@pisd.edu or call (469) 752-0611. The committee meets three times a year from 3-4p.m. Our tentative dates for this year are:
Thursday, Oct. 6th 3:15
Monday, January 30th 3:15
Monday, June 5th 3:15
We look forward to a very successful year ahead and anticipate your participation as a member of our Carlisle family community.
3rd Grade Brain Break
2nd Grade Science
This is a part of our making healthy choices unit. We learned about what causes cavities and how to brush and floss. We used egg cartons to approximate our teeth and plastic cord as the floss to remove that stubborn plaque buildup (playdough) between teeth.
To show the effect that sugary foods have on our teeth, we soaked hard boiled eggs in Coke. We observed the discoloration and then used toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean them. We could see areas the brushing missed.

Nurses' News
Head Lice-Head’s Up
Head lice can be quite a nuisance. In the first weeks of school we often see cases that are related to summer activities such as camps and sleep overs with friends. Unfortunately head lice is a 12 month a year problem. Most cases can be tied to contacts outside of school including neighborhood friends, sports teams and clubs. However, many of those contacts also attend the same school so it quickly becomes a school issue as well.
A few years ago, the state of Texas revised the school exclusion criteria for lice. Evidence has shown that most cases of head lice identified at school have actually been present for several weeks before they are discovered. Therefore, students are not excluded from school the moment they are discovered. Students are permitted to stay until the end of the day. Parents are contacted and are welcome to pick up early if they can. Sometimes, subtle measures are taken such as having the student tie up long hair. It is expected that the student has a lice treatment that day and returns to school the next morning. The student is readmitted after an examination by the school nurse. If no live lice are found, the student is returned to class. In the week or so following the treatment, parents are asked to use a fine toothed comb to continue to comb out the nits (eggs). Most lice products recommend treating the head again in 7-10 days. Continued removal of all eggs is the best way to prevent a recurrence.
There are some basic steps that can be taken at home to help eradicate the problem. Here is the link to the PISD head lice information that may help: http://www.pisd.edu/parents/health/documents/5.LiceTreatmentGuideforParents.pdf
There are many different kinds of lice products available over the counter and there are services that will treat your child for a fee. There are even prescription treatments that can be used in cases where the situation recurs.
It helps when parents contact the school nurse if they have found head lice on their child. We track trends and try to follow up on known contacts. Teachers are very vigilant about noticing kids with itchy heads. The school nurse is an expert on the life cycle and treatment of head lice. She can also provide moral support! We try to maintain privacy when children have head lice, however, it is very important to be open with your child’s close contacts so that they can be checked as well.
We do wish that we could remove the “Ick” factor around head lice but it seems that most of us will always say “EEK” when we discover head lice. On the other hand, if we are open about the problem, perhaps some of the stigma would be removed. Please contact Miss Grace with any questions you have. Even a late evening e-mail question will be returned ASAP. Hoping your family has a lice free year.
Take a Taste Tuesday
Take a Taste Tuesday
This week Take a Taste Tuesday was brought to you by the Letter B. Mrs. Newhouse’s first grade and Mrs. McCasland’s fourth grade classes got to taste Bell Peppers. Miss Grace brought a red, green, yellow and orange bell pepper for the students to taste. Some students had never seen a bell pepper or tasted one before. Everyone got to taste at least 2 colors each. In each class there were students who didn’t think they would want to try it again, but everyone took at least a bite. We love that you are trying new things! At least 80% of the students in each class thought the peeper tasted good. They learned that bell peppers are high in Vitamin C and the red ones are high in Vitamin A. Even though they are in the pepper family, bell peppers do not have the chemical capsaicin so they are not spicy hot like other peppers. They are often called sweet peppers. Bell pepper strips make a great crunchy snack when served raw and make a lot of foods tastier when they are added to recipes. Put colorful bell peppers on your shopping list this week!
