Fall has arrived!

Everyone looked happy to be at the Back-to-School Night Open House last night. Thanks to all of our families who were able to attend. We look forward to working with all of you in our Pilgrim 100% Participation effort!

Pilgrim Fest is this Sunday!! Come join us for a fun filled day. Hope to see you there!


The Pilgrim Block Party is THIS SUNDAY!!! All are welcome to join us for OUTDOOR WORSHIP at 10 a.m. During the Service, the congregation officially receives and installs the teachers and staff for the 2016-2017 School Year. Immediately following the Service the Block Party fun starts with food, games, petting zoo and many, many other activities. It’s a great way to draw the Pilgrim community together: Hot Meals, School, Worship Community, Neighborhood, and is a great way to embody our mission to gather, prepare, and send. The Party lasts till 4 p.m. Come for all of it or just part. Pilgrim’s 7th Graders are in charge of the beverage booth, with proceeds going towards their 8th Grade Washington Trip. Winchester is blocked to traffic for the day so plan for parking accordingly. Supported by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Profits from the fest were going to Benefit the Pilgrim Lutheran School Technology Program!!

Students! You will be participating in this Sunday's 10 a.m. service! Parents, please bring your children to a special Sunday School and singing practice at 9:15 a.m.

Check out the Pilgrim Quilters' Raffle Quilt with its Halloween features which is hanging in the back of church. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 and will be available at the Open-House, in the school office on Friday and at the PilgrimFest on Sunday. Drawing will be on Sunday and the winner need not be present to win! Profits benefit the ELCA Disaster Response.

This event has been part of the Pilgrim fabric for over 30 years. It requires that most adults volunteer a small amount of time during the event to keep everything running smoothly. Click below to sign up!

Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer last night! Spots are still available and sign up sheets are in the school office. One very immediate need for volunteers is during lunch in the Pre-K room. Any parent who wants to help is welcome—you don’t have to be a Pre-K or a K parent. On days without volunteers, Mrs. Halter, Mrs. B and Mr. Knuth must supervise—which means no lunch for them!! Please help if you can. We currently have no helpers on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Parent-Teacher League (PTL) meets on Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m. in the Annex (the room to the side of Maring Hall). Feel free to bring a refreshment. Everyone who volunteered as a room representative, please come. If you volunteered to help with the Halloween Party, we need you there to coordinate our efforts. Halloween Party is the biggest purely social event of the year at Pilgrim. Let’s make it the best ever!!!

2016-17 Calendar and School Directory

If you need a calendar or a copy of the School Directory for 2016-2017, extras are in the Office. Every family is entitled to 1 calendar. We only have a limited number of extras. Special thanks to Carrie Goerne for putting together the PTL calendar. And thanks to PTL for underwriting the calendar costs.

Pilgrim has safe drinking water!

Just in time for the school year, we have received the results from testing our drinking water and it meets the United States EPA Action Level of less than 15 PPb. The sinks in the schoolrooms, the drinking fountains and kitchen were all tested for lead.


Designated Handicapped Parking on Winchester is reserved for families with “other-abled” family members. We have families at Pilgrim for whom this reserved parking is intended. Please do not leave your car there with your flashers on. This creates a real hardship. Thanks for your kind observance of the signs.

We are excited to start another year of Band at Pilgrim. Pilgrim Band Teacher Ouida Zaporta is hosting a Band Petting Zoo on Tuesday, September 20, immediately after school. All students and their parents who are interested in Band are invited to attend. Band is open to all students in Grades 4-8. The cost for band is $275 per child per semester. Ms. Zaporta will be visiting upper grade classrooms to answer questions from students. If you would like your child to be in band and cannot attend the Petting Zoo, please contact Ms. Zaporta at euph25@gmail.com. Ms. Zaporta has extensive experience working with middle school band. Band Day will be Thursdays and we plan to start September 21.

Pilgrim Auction

Pilgrim Auction is taking a new path this year. At the Back-to-School Night Open House, we announced that for Auction 2017, the on-line auction is on hiatus and the party is free. In order to make this work, the Auction Working Group is asking that each Pilgrim family, both in the school and in the church congregation, make a pledge to donate $250 or sell $250 worth of raffle tickets. This is a gamble for us, as we depend on the Auction to bridge a significant gap in our Pilgrim budget. We are planning for the party in April and we are still working on locking down the venue, but with 100% participation, we can make this work. Every donation earns your family a tax letter; every homeroom with 100% participation, gets a party. If you have questions or concerns about how this is going to work, please address those with Principal Comella or Pastor Kristian.

Hot Dog Friday's

This week is the last week you will be able to pay on Fridays. Starting next week, you will need to pay MONTHLY or YEARLY for your child to receive a hot dog lunch on Friday.

You will need to leave a check in Valerie Carlson's church mailbox no later than Wednesday, September 21st to have your child receive a hot dog lunch on Friday, September 23rd. You will need to have paid $12.00 monthly or get your hot dogs for the whole year for $108.00. If you choose to purchase your hot dogs monthly or yearly, please write a check to Pilgrim Lutheran School and put your check in Valerie Carlson's church mailbox or Shannon Andreen's school mailbox. All of the proceeds from the sales will go towards the 7th-grade fundraising for their trip to Washington, D.C. and the 8th-graduation. We appreciate your support.

Oktoberfest Party

It is not too late to join in the fun for the Oktoberfest Auction Party. Break out your Dirndl or Lederhosen and join us for dinner and German bier as we celebrate Oktoberfest the Pilgrim way. Chapel Theme for 2016-2017 is Life-Giving Water

During the opening Parent Chapel, Pastor Kristian started the discussion of how the Bible uses water as a powerful image of how good things happen in the world. The focus of chapel this year will be how the people written about in the Bible have received and used water to make the world—and our spirits--better. Chapel offerings this year will go toward the ELCA’s year-long campaign to fund water projects in developing countries. May blessings rain down on us all!

Sunday School Begins!Music! Games! Lessons! Fun! We invite kids ages 5-12 to grow and learn with us! We begin this Sunday, September 11th at the 10:30 a.m. service. All the kids will remain in church through the Baptism, followed by dismissal to nursery for the youngest, or Sunday School for kids from pre-school through Grade 5 in the Annex and Maring Hall.

Moms in Prayer

PRAY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION - Attention moms, grandmas, aunts - any woman desiring to pray for children and schools. Experience the joy of replacing anxiety with peace and hope when you pray scripturally and specifically for your child, Pilgrim Lutheran School and other schools. Opening the Treasure: New Opportunity for Parents and Kids

We as parents want our children to have a solid spiritual foundation. We want our children to learn about the Bible in a meaningful and age appropriate way. We also hear the research that faith formation happens primarily at home, but we as parents don't know where to start, and we don't think we know enough about the Bible ourselves. Pastor Kristian is offering a 5 session class called "Opening the Treasure", which will help parents and students of all ages explore the Bible together. The format will be similar to the First Communion Class that is offered each spring, but will have completely different content. The first session will take place on Wednesday, October 12th at 5:30 p.m. The class will continue at 5:30 p.m. on October 19th, 26th, and November 2nd and 9th, culminating with a special celebration on the 13th. The North Center MOPs group is a group for mothers of preschoolers that meets the first and third Thursday of each month. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 22nd at 9:30 a.m.

Cocktails for a Cause 3 - SAVE THE DATE

Cocktails for a Cause 3 is coming on Friday, November 11. This is a party to connect Pilgrim families, past and present, and build up the Dave Maring School Endowment Fund (DMSE). This year the disbursement from the DMSE paid for workshops for teachers to learn about new science standards, new ways of teaching writing, and new ideas for teaching in Pre-K. Party Tickets are $40 each or $70 for a couple. The party is at the Celtic Crown Public House at Western and Cullom. Ticket price includes 2 drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Child-care will be available during the event in the school building. Tickets for the party are available in the school office.
