BIS Newsletter Week 5 Term 1
Friday 5th March 2021
Kia ora e te whānau,
After a very unsettled couple of weeks, I am hopeful that we will be returning to school and that things will get back to our regular routine. Our staff, students and community have shown great resilience over the last 2 lockdowns and have adapted quickly to at-home learning. Thank you all for the support and for persevering with learning in your home environment.
While we may have some sort of normality returning, we are still going back into an alert level 2 environment so we need to be mindful of what this means. Social distancing, masks on public transport, safe sneezing and coughing etiquette and limited numbers at events are now part of our daily lives. Please remind your child to have a named drink bottle at school as water fountains are closed and to bring and use their own stationery. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home.
In times of disruption, we can all begin to worry more and feel uneasy about what is ahead. We are planning as if level 1 will be our new norm for 2021. We will be encouraging our students to get involved and participate in activities and to enjoy the freedom that so many other parts of the world do not have in this covid climate.
Having things to look forward to is a great way to change the focus from negatives to positives. There are 2 big events coming up this term that I urge you to get ready for.
The Beach Haven Fun Run is always a great Sunday morning event down at Shepherds Park. Our school is always well represented. It is a 5km fun run or walk around Shepherds Park, through the bush and along the main roads. It is for the whole family and is always a fun morning out. Please watch for information about this event and plan on taking part.
The second event is for adults only and this is our Puttin' on the Ritz community ball on 10 April. This is a fabulous way for you to dress to impress, meet up with other parents, have a night out and get to know new faces in the community. Please encourage your friends to come along and enjoy the food, the drinks, the 2 live bands and the gorgeous decorations that will be transforming our school hall into a stunning ballroom. All information and links to ticket sales are on the website.
Enjoy your weekend and we look forward to reconnecting with your child on Monday.
Ngā mihi nui,
So Proud of Nick
So many of our students come from diverse backgrounds and have personal struggles to overcome every day. It is always a very good reminder about why we prioritise the value of kindness at Birkdale Intermediate School.
Thank you Nick for being such an inspirational role model.

Term 1 Zone Days
Unfortunately due to covid restrictions, we have had our swimming and softball zone days postponed. We need to be in level one for zone days to go ahead. This may cause the Boys Cricket and Tag zone days to be postponed too. Currently, we don't know what the new dates will be. But as soon as we know, we will send out updated permission slips to parents.
Our goal is to find ways to ensure safe participation in events for our students.
Please ensure we have an up-to-date email address, download our BIS School App, like our Facebook page and check our website regularly for more detailed information about what is happening at BIS.
SportSpasifiks Niuways Free Zumba and Boxfit program starting next week 15th and 17th Feb 6.30-730pm in the Birkdale Intermediate School hall. All parents and students welcome. The programme runs for 6weeks, with plenty of fun, open to all ages and fitness levels.
