Jump Into a New Routine

You probably some of the healthy benefits of jump roping...but did you realize that it's also a great way to build pre-literacy skills? Jump rope rhymes are a great way for pre-readers (and beginning readers) to hear the parts of words and build phonological awareness. The rhythm of jump roping helps kids naturally break down words and gives them valuable practice (plus, it's a fun exercise habit).

Here are a few rhymes to try:

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back

She asked her mother, mother, mother
For fifty cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump the fence, fence, fence.
They jumped so high, high, high
They reached the sky, sky, sky
And didn't come back, back, back
Till the 4th of July-ly-ly!

Buckle My Shoe

One, two, Buckle my shoe;

Three, four, Shut the door;

Five, six, Pick up sticks;

Seven, eight, Lay them straight:

Nine, ten, A big fat hen.
