Guided Discovery Operations for the Fall Semester
Guided Discovery will continue to operate mainly virtually for the Fall semester. Some Guides may potentially return to campus and work in our Hege library space during the 12-week session per their discretion- any in-person meetings or appointments will likely be set up and communicated ahead of time, and will be socially-distanced.
Guides continue to be readily available via email and phone, and conducting meetings virtually on Zoom or Google Hangouts with students and faculty/staff colleagues alike.
As always, we encourage students to continue setting up appointments with their Guides via Navigate. After setting up an appointment, Guides will be in touch with students about mode of meeting (phone, virtual, in-person).
Our Virtual Help Desk
Additionally, as a reminder, we have launched a virtual help desk for all students, faculty, staff, and other guests to connect with our office to ask questions or get assistance. This takes the place of our physical front desk and main phone line that are not in use as our office continues to work virtually this semester.
Anyone can now access our virtual help desk via Zoom (account registration not needed) where one of our Integrated Advising Mentors (IAMs) is waiting and happy to assist! IAMs can help at our virtual desk in the following ways:
Answer questions about Guided Discovery or academic and career services, or refer you to a Guide or other campus resource
Help students with using Navigate and scheduling an appointment with a Guide
Help students with navigating Banner for course search, Degree Evaluation, or other academic services
Help students with navigating the Undergraduate Catalog and Degree Maps for course planning and degree information
Looking over and giving feedback on resumes and/or cover letters for students
Assist students in using our career services platform, Handshake, and referring them to other career services or a Career Guide
The help desk hours for the 12-week session are: M - W 9am-4:30pm, TH 11am-4pm, F 9:30am 4pm. During those hours, the virtual desk is live and an IAM will be online to help. View the current hours on our website.
We encourage you to refer students to our help desk for these matters, and of course login to the desk yourself if you need immediate questions or assistance with anything! You can find this information for future reference on the front page of our website, as well as lots of other helpful resources from our office. You can also access the help desk at the direct link: guilford.zoom.us/my/gdhelpdesk, during live hours.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
I would purchase land and hire contractors to build a Tiny House village ( with a community center that also provides mental health services and access to fresh fruits and veggies) for Houseless folks. The land would be large enough for farming and gardening.
What’s your favorite line from a movie?
"You are the perfect verse over a tight beat"~ Brown Sugar
If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
Storm from X-MenIAM Spotlight: Aylen Bernal
Aylen (she/her/hers) joins Guided Discovery this year as one of our Integrated Advising Mentors (IAMs)!
Hometown and State:
Greensboro, NC
Class Year and Major(s)/Minor(s):
2023. I am double majoring in psychology and health science.
Why are you an IAM?
I wanted to be an IAM this year because Guided Discovery had such a positive impact on me during my first year. Being a part of it now is rewarding.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
If I could be any fictional character, I would want to be the Lorax. It would be cool to speak for the trees and have a mustache. If you've seen the animated adaptation, I would also sound like Danny Devito.
What is your favorite '90s jam?
Lovefool by The Cardigans.
NYC. It has this energy that is brimming from the moment you arrive. So intense, so youthful, like anything is possible.
What is the one thing you cannot resist?
A night in making dinner with friends. Or karaoke.
What is your favorite line from a movie?
From Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha:
"And it's funny and sad, but only because this life will end, and it's this secret world that exists right there in public, unnoticed, that no one else knows about. It's sort of like how they say that other dimensions exist all around us, but we don't have the ability to perceive them. That's- That's what I want out of a relationship. Or just life, I guess."
