Year 6 Science Experiment

Mrs Moore was glowing with praise for her Year 6 class after their science experiment on Thursday. The children revealed their investigative skills during their dissection of a sheep's heart! They also made accurate and labelled models of a heart which showed how much they had learnt from their practical experiment.

Little Big Sing

We are sure our Year 1 and 2 classes enjoyed the opportunity of enjoying singing together with a large group of children from Ripon schools in the Cathedral on Tuesday. A wonderful moment was when the children sang 'One Voice.' One of our Year 2 pupils bravely sang a solo and was joined by a few more children, building until the whole cathedral was singing along. A truly special event! Thank you to all family and friends who supported the Big Sing, we hope you enjoyed it too!

NSPCC Workshops

It was great to welcome back Buddy and his colleagues from the NSPCC on Wednesday! The Year 5 and 6 classes participated in workshops to help them to understand how different scenarios can impact on children. They learnt about speaking out and staying safe. The people from the NSPCC taught the children a way to remember the child line number, 0800 1111, that they can call to get free, confidential advice and support whatever the worry or need.

World Book Day

A little advanced warning in case you would like to prepare costumes over the half term break - the first Thursday back, 7th March, is World Book Day. Please do not feel you have to go to much trouble, and certainly there is no need to spend a lot of money, but we hope you agree, it is fun when the children come into school dressed as a character from a book.

Parent Governor Nominations

We hope everyone has had a chance to read the letter sent home on Monday about the opportunity to be a governor. The governing body is a group of hardworking volunteers who provide support, skills and expertise to help us all make Ripon Cathedral School the best it can be! They are looking in particular this time to fill the following skills gaps:

· Expertise in safeguarding;

· Experience of health and safety regulations and procedures;

· Marketing proficiency.

Please see Mrs Rich in the office if you would like more details and a nomination form. The closing date for nominations is Monday 4th March.

Building Works

A letter was sent home on Monday explaining our exciting plans for the Early Years and Oscar's classrooms. These works will focus on improving toilet provision, with a door installed between Nursery and Reception so that children have better access to the outdoor areas. We will also be developing the kitchen area in Oscar's.

It is expected that these works will take approximately 4 weeks to complete and will have some impact on the daily organisation of the school. The Nursery outdoor area will be out of use until 18th March and the Nursery children will be taught in the classroom that is used by Oscar's for the period of the build. To avoid congestion in the Reception corridor, we are asking parents and carers to drop off and pick up Nursery children via the Oscar's gate until building works are complete.

We are not expecting any disruption for children in the Reception class and pick up and drop off arrangements will be as normal.

Dropping off and Picking Up: Safeguarding children is a high priority and particularly with the building works and changes to morning and end of day routines for a minority of children, can we please remind all parents and carers that they should not be using the staff car park. Most deliveries are planned for before 8.30am to have as little impact as possible, but parents who use Oscar's will not be able to use the staff car park and must accompany children across it please. The workmen will be leaving at around 4.30pm, so please take care if you are collecting from Oscar's or an after school club, thank you.

Enjoying a sunny day in Oscar's!

We have enjoyed having a full house at Oscar's today during the teacher appointment and training day. The children had a try at straw blowing painting before going out to make use of an empty playground in bright sunshine!
