A Note From the Nurse About Head Lice
The main way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact. Head lice are crawling insects. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. There is a small chance that head lice will spread because of sharing items such as combs, brushes, and hats. Many people have the impression that a person becomes infested with head lice because s/he is unclean. This is NOT TRUE. Frequent bathing neither prevents head lice nor eliminates the infestation.
Head lice are elongated insects and are greyish-white in color. They do not have wings nor can they jump. They do move very quickly which can make it difficult to find in a child's hair. Because they can be so hard to see, the diagnosis of head lice is often made by examining the scalp for NITS. A nit is the louse egg. It is tear-shaped and varies in color from white to yellowish-brown. Head lice attach each nit to a hair shaft in a water-proof, cement-like substance. This means they cannot be washed or brushed out of the hair or scalp like dandruff and other such particles that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye. Clusters of nits may be found in any section of the hair so a careful examination should be made of the entire scalp.
If your child has a known case of head lice, please notify the nurse so that she can help ensure there are no reoccurrences.
The most effective way to treat head lice is with head lice medicine. Head lice medicine should only be used when it is certain that your child has head lice.
When head lice medicines are used, it is important to use them safely and follow the instructions on the package closely.
Note: The comb-out method (removing head lice without medicine from damp hair with a fine-toothed comb) often fails. Also, home remedies, like using petroleum jelly, mayonnaise, tub margarine, herbal oils, or olive oil, have not been scientifically proven to work.
Attached is a sheet with information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about head lice and DCSC Pediculosis (head lice) Policy.
