RHJ Weekly Update

COVID Guidelines - UPDATE
As you’re likely aware, on Tuesday, February 9, Premier Jason Kenney announced several changes to pandemic-related public-health measures. The key points are below, but the main change for schools is that students aren't required to wear masks, but they are still encouraged and welcome. Students and their families will be supported in making the decision that suits them best, and the school will support all students in their decision. All other measures, including daily screening, staying home with symptoms, cohorting, among others remain in effect.
Here are the changes:
- Effective Monday, February 14, students will not be required to wear masks in school or on school buses.
- The exception: Students who test positive for COVID-19, and who must isolate for five days if fully vaccinated or symptoms resolve, whichever is longer. They still need to wear a mask at all times until 10 days pass from the onset of symptoms. We will support students with a place to remove their mask to eat.
- Masking is still required for adults, including teachers, administrators, school staff and bus operators. EIPS will continue providing medical-grade masks to staff, for as long as the Division determines that level of protection is necessary (as per the hazard assessment required under Occupational Health and Safety legislation).
- Volunteers, contractors, and visitors—12 years and older—must also wear masks when entering EIPS schools and buildings. Vaccination requirements for staff, volunteers and contractors will remain in place for now.
- EIPS recommends students wear masks as an additional layer of protection, but it is a personal choice and we will respect each school family’s decision.
- School divisions no longer have the authority to implement division-specific or school-specific student mask mandates.
- Public-health measures, such as cohorting, hand hygiene, and enhanced cleaning and sanitization, remain in schools for the time being.
- Metro Athletics announced spectators are still not allowed at athletic events. The organization plans to consult with school divisions in the coming days.
- Staff and students must still stay home when sick and adhere to legal isolation requirements based on their vaccination status.
We understand you likely have many other questions. Once we receive additional information from the Government of Alberta, we will revise the EIPS Operations Guidelines 2021-22 and advise you of the specifics.
Complete the Returning Student Registration: February 1-28
Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) returning student registration process is open Feb 1. All returning students must complete the online Returning Student Registration Form to confirm their child’s enrolment in a school for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. All returning EIPS students are required to complete the form by Feb. 28, 2022.
To access the Returning Student Registration Form, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you do need to set one up. For help see: Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account

Young Women in Trades and Technologies (YWITT) is a program designed to break barriers and give young women the opportunity and confidence to explore different career options in non-traditional skilled trades and technologies. Registration is open to female-identifying students currently in grades 9 to 12.
2. Career Pathways is designed to develop skills that students can apply in their daily lives when preparing for entry into the workplace or for further learning opportunities. Competencies achieved will allow students to make relevant connections with work and/or post-secondary training.
Each month Career Pathways distributes relevant planning material, presentation sessions, occupational spotlights, and other helpful information meant to support students and families. It is our hope students in Junior High begin to understand opportunities available to them and explore and reflect on a variety of experiences to help them plan their next steps. High School students continue to set goals and further develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that increase their readiness to successfully transition beyond high school.

Counsellor Corner
We are in the midst of a transition between counsellors. Ms. Kropp has moved on to a different school and we thank her for supporting our school community. We have been able to add some additional counselling time to support the mental health of our students, which is very exciting! This transition will happen in early March. In the meantime, please reach out to Mrs. Orr or Mr. Shudra or your student's teacher for student support questions. Thanks for your support during this transition.
