Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Three Week 10 - 22 September 2017
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
College Success
Earlier this week the College conducted our end of Term assembly. The assembly again highlighted many students who continue to strive for excellence throughout the academic year, in several areas of school life. Success has been demonstrated across the performing arts, external competitions, debating, and in the sporting domain. Well done to all students who continue to represent the school with pride in the areas that they enjoy and have success.
Leadership
I would like to acknowledge the hard work of all the Year 12, 2017 leaders, thank you for leading by example. To the Student Executive Team consisting of College Captains Alex Smith and Chloe De Faria and Deputy College Captains Sage Cuff and Joe Waters. These young leaders have represented the student body throughout the year, posed some challenging questions to the College Executive, and lead by example. I know the student executive of 2018 have some big shoes to fill. To the Year 12 Leaders of 2018, congratulations on accepting your roles for next year, I know you will continue to develop and grow into your positions with time. Mother Teresa once said “If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are.” It is in the small things we do without the accolades that make us truly inspirational leaders. As one of the College Core Values state, “We will model Christ in our behaviour” why not in the way we lead.
Class of 2017
To the Class of 2017, who have concluded their formal classes today, continue to strive for excellence beyond your years at Emmanuel Catholic College. I look forward to seeing you graduate from the College on Friday 20 October. This day commences with the annual “Breakfast on the Green” for Year 12 students, followed by Mass and the Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the evening. On behalf of the College community, I wish those students who are completing their ATAR Practical Exams and the Semester Two exams during the holidays the very best. Continue to work through your notes and skills in preparation for your examinations.
Farewell
At the conclusion of Term Three, we have a number of staff I would like to say farewell to. Firstly, I would like to say thank you and farewell to Mrs Rebecca Cummins who has been assisting in our Religious Education team while a number of staff have been on leave. Our invaluable prac students are leaving us today too, and I thank Hannah Cully, Cassie Gawley, Ana Frankovic, Chalise Eeson, Nicholas Brooke and Lindsay Ackerley for their fantastic support during their time at Emmanuel, and wish them all the best in their remaining studies. Mr Vernon Marillier is taking long service leave next Term, and I hope he enjoys his leave, and I look forward to seeing him return refreshed and ready for the start of 2018.
College Works
A reminder that the fenced off area near the soccer and football ovals is out of bounds and no member of the College community can access the work site. Please make sure you are careful around this area as there has been an increase in traffic over the last few days.
Families may have also noticed that additional works have commenced between A and B block this week. The College has commenced works for an undercover walk way between these blocks, allowing for more space intended for the placement of future lockers.
Final Words
All families should have received an email from your relevant Head of Year outlining the expectations of the Term 4 uniform requirements. I have included this below;
As we are in the final weeks of term, can I please ask all parents and guardians to make an opportunity to check your student’s summer uniform. If you could please ensure that summer dresses meet mid-knee and grey shorts are still suitably sized and in good condition, that would be greatly appreciated.
I also addressed all students at the College Assembly in regards to the importance of adhering to the College expectations regarding hair and general grooming. With only one term left before the end of the academic year, it is essential that we return to school in the correct uniform.
I do thank you all for your continued support and wish you all a safe and restful break. I look forward to seeing you at the commencement of Term 4.
God Bless,
Mr Vince Bellini - Acting Principal

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.
In fact the eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us, like the eagle, we can rise above them and ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment into our lives. What is your greatest challenge right now? Jot it down then let it lift you higher.

EELS AT PERTH "SWITCHED ON SCHOOLS" SUMMIT
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week some of the Emmanuel Environmental Leadership Squad members attended the Perth Switched on Schools Summit run by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. This conference was all about empowering youth people to act in the fight for climate change, with a focus on renewable energies. Students heard speakers representing the Lock the Gate Project and Love the Reef Campaign and participated in a workshops about how to conduct action. Students also participated in a Youth Parliament which was broadcast on Facebook.
Aidan and Riley spoke on behalf of the Emmanuel students calling for the Prime Minister and local politicians to support 100% renewable energy initiatives in schools around the country. The students have started to design a campaign to promote the use of solar within our community. The two days were full of great ideas, networking with likeminded students and a sense of achievement as our students learnt they were not alone in the fight against Climate Change.

EMMANUEL STUDENTS MAKE CARE PACKAGES FOR WANSLEA
The Year 11 Children, Family and Community Class had the amazing opportunity to make Care packages for Wanslea. The organisation Wanslea is a foster care centre for children from ages 0-18. Their aim is to put children in beds as quickly as possible. Children suffer from PTSD and do not usually have their own possessions. Each of the Year 11 students in the CFC class selected an age group to make their care package for and then created one that catered to the age.
We made homemade items like blankets, pillows and teddy bears and we also included some shop-bought items to complete the care packages. It was a very rewarding and inspiring experience for our class. For many if not all the students, seeing the face of the lady who came to collect the care packages for the children was most rewarding and we hope that all the children benefit from it. Thanks to Miss Aisling O’Sullivan for bringing us this wonderful opportunity.
Year 11 CFC student - Hannah Gladwell

The enrolment process for Year 7 2019 students has now been completed. Any applications received from now on, including siblings, will be placed on a waiting list. Enrolments at Emmanuel Catholic College have become very competitive and it is important that students requiring a place in Year 7 2020 submit their Enrolment Applications this year.
The necessary reports required to accompany the application can be submitted at the end of the year once they are received. Interviews for Year 7 2020 commence at the beginning of 2018 and we envisage all places will be filled by the end of Semester 1 2018. Catholic students will be given preference as per our Enrolment Policy.

YEAR 7 - 11 PARENTS
Is your child returning in 2018?
Can you please notify the College Registrar if your child is not returning to the College in 2018? Please email Mrs Kelly Lister on enrolments@emmanuel.wa.edu.au to notify us in writing of your child exiting. The College policy requires parents to provide one term’s notice of a student exiting. In situations where this policy is not adhered to, a term’s fees may be charged.

FROM THE FINANCE DESK
The College Fee Collection Policy has been reviewed and we now have a new Debt Recovery Officer as part of the finance team. Families not conforming to this policy will be contacted accordingly as non payment will not be tolerated. Unfortunately, a small number of families are not complying with the College Policy in regard to addressing outstanding school fees and are now facing further recovery action.
Thank you to all the families who are paying their school fees on time and understand the importance of keeping your fee account up-to-date with payments. Additionally if a family is currently experiencing financial hardship with regards to payment of their school fee account, immediate contact must be made with the Finance Department to discuss the matter, which will be, if required, forwarded to the Business Manager/Principal. We are quite amenable to making realistic payment arrangements for parents who find themselves in such situations.
As per College policy, if correspondence from the College is continually ignored, further recovery action will be taken.
Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.
